Layers.

A safe is a final layer in your security system. ( talking about theft primarily)
Your curtilage perimeter, house int/ext illum and alert, access doors windows & locks, interior alarm w/ video and then the safe.

Usually the exterior stuff is enough to deter most thieves, maybe not in rural areas, then add a fence and a gate with links to your alarms.

I have assisted folks in a comprehensive plan for under $5k. The people in the house are more important than the things, of course, but a system protects all if used.

I got one word for all this - Decoy's!
You would have TWO safes - one sort of readily accessible with some paltry booty and one hidden but easily accessible with the real stuff.

Good point on layered defense. Thieves usually pick the easiest target. The more layers of defense you have, the less likely they’ll even try.

Layers. Exactly. a thousand pound safe that the thieves were (hopefully) unaware of is the last line of defense in your security plan. Most thieves would prefer to put a safe on a dolly and load it into a van and then take it somewhere secluded to crack it. a 1000 lb gun safe that is bolted to the floor does a lot to prevent that. a thousand pound safe is also a major deterrent to your common burglar types-the junkie types looking for quick cash for a fix, the kids looking for thrills and easy cash, etc. your more uncommon type of thief, the experienced safe cracker type would only be interested in your home if he A.) knew you had a safe and B.) he knew there was something in there worth the effort and risk. That's probably not a small collection of firearms of unknown value. That's cash and precious metals, fine jewelry, gold coins, etc I don't think an experienced safe cracker would risk a torch, an angle grinder, or removing a large gun safe in the middle of the night in an urban setting over unknown contents, especially when there are internal alarms systems readily available.
