Vusumuzi Mthembu, writing on polygamy in the Nguni culture, said: "Bathi asiganwe umfazi ngamunye. Lezi zintombi ezingangotshani zizophelelaphi? Ziyogana izinyamazane? Phinde!" Translated, it says "They say we must be married to one wife. What will then happen to these many women? Who will they marry? Deers? Never!"
Perhaps the question Vusumuzi would have to answer today is: "If we want to marry many wives, can we afford to?"
And this is what the University of KwaZulu-Natal's cultural expert, Gugu Mkhize says all polygamists-to-be must consider -- the financial implications of the practice.
"Polygamy seems not viable in the 21st century if you can't afford it," she told on Wednesday HuffPost SA.
This is especially important in an age where marriages in general have been found to be buckling under money pressures, with financial strain being the biggest cause of marital conflict and marriage breakdowns. This, then, can be exacerbated in a polygamous situation....

The welfare Mormon polygamists are secretive. They’re not the upstanding citizens who are willing to appear on TV.
In Utah they pay for it by “bleeding the monster”. “Monster” being the Government/Taxpayers.
The key to polygamy is poverty: Women could not grow enough to feed themselves independently, and without a son to feed them in their old age they would starve.
In Tribal Africa, polygamy allowed disabled/crippled etc. women to find husbands (to support them. In areas where war killed a lot of men, it allowed the women to find husbands.
However, one overlooked problem of polygamy is that it means poorer men can’t find wives. Why marry a poor man when a rich one can support you?
We once asked our African nursing students why a local shopkeeper, who had 5 wives, one for each of his stores, why a girl would agree to marry him. And the nurses said: Well, why not? They would always have enough to eat, a nice dress every year, and a good job in a store, not out in the fields working with crops.
and before you laugh, just remember: in the USA we have serial polygamy, and alas the divorced wives and children often end up in poverty.
A lot of these lonely feminist career women might find a share of one man who will have them preferable to all of one who won’t.
Shoot, a growing number of people can’t afford to take care of themselves let alone one or more spouses.
“Only the most backward societies allow polygamy today.”
Yet the West permits serial polygamy where men have a series of marriages and the West also tolerates and in some cases encourages upper income men to have wives and mistresses...but it’s okay so long as they don’t actually care about their mistresses.
The West also allows Muslims to be polygamists with hardly any question about the practice.
I was on a business trip about 40 years ago, traveling through Utah with a guy that lived there. He said that you could tell how many wives a man had by the number of chimneys on his house. Each wife and set of kids had their own separate living area.
