NYT: Trump Roars Again on Trade — a Victory for White House Economic Nationalists

Mark Landler writes in the New York Times that President Trump’s latest trade initiatives mark a return to the populist policies of the campaign and a victory for Steve Bannon and the economic nationalist wing of the Trump administration. From the New York Times:

From Mr. Trump’s “buy American, hire American” rallying cry in Wisconsin this week to Vice President Mike Pence’s warnings to Japan and South Korea about the need to rewrite trade deals, the Trump administration is moving against free trade on multiple fronts. A senior White House official said there would be two trade-related events a week for the next few weeks.

“He’s manically focused on these trade issues,” said Stephen K. Bannon, the president’s chief strategist.

The flurry of activity amounts to a comeback by nationalists like Mr. Bannon, who views trade as crucial to Mr. Trump’s populist appeal but whose star has dimmed after clashes with globalist-minded aides like Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law, and Gary D. Cohn, the former Goldman Sachs banker

From the NYT: “Last week the globalists appeared to be winning when the administration decided not to formally designate China a currency manipulator, despite Mr. Trump’s vow to do so during the campaign.”

I saw a report that said that China stopped manipulating its currency on November 9, 2016 and President Trump noticed. ;-)

Still not tired of winning!

How about an article title that goes something like this...

“Trump Roars Again on Trade — a Victory for America”

They just can’t bring themselves to talk about reality and focus on the outcomes of Trumps’ actions, instead, somehow Bannon has made a remarkable comeback...they truly live in a destructive echo chamber...

From Mr. Trump’s “buy American, hire American” rallying cry in Wisconsin this week to Vice President Mike Pence’s warnings to Japan and South Korea about the need to rewrite trade deals, the Trump administration is moving against free trade on multiple fronts.
It's a hit piece from a NYT dimwit that doesn't know the true meaning of free trade.

BTW NYT. How does rewriting trade deals make them not free trade?

First of all, I saw it was the NYT, so I was immediately suspicious, but I noticed that too. You are probably right. The chump wouldn't know free trade, if it bashed his head in.

‘Victory for Bannon’.

There they go again in the FIRST sentence in a NYT article.

Excellent question, raycpa.

Rush Limbaugh pointed out earlier this week that the drive-bys are trying to make Trump jealous of his advisor.

Divide and conquer.

Man was he right! The NYT is even willing to report positive news just to drive that wedge between them.

The whole damn world has cast China as a Currency Manipulator. President Trump has to say nothing.

IIRC, China has just stoked a huge deal with Russia...the currency...GOLD.

Oh, NO!!! Not a nationalist (and everybody knows that economic nationalists are the very worst kind - shudder). “Economic nationalist” is a dog whistle that the author either was taught in journalism school, or learned from his elite journalist buddies along the way. It is intended as a high brow epithet.

Democrats want jobs too. I can’t get over their resistance to Trump wanting to get more people to work in higher paying jobs than Walmart which is what Obama strived for

Good!!!

That’s the guy we voted for and I’m very happy about this and many other things.

As for telling young illegals to rest easy, I know for Trump that can mean “for now” while he gets MS13 illegals and others out of the country for good first.

They throw around the terms *populist* and *nationalist* as if that’s a bad thing.

It’s not.

You go, President Trump.

And THANK YOU!

Soon the next logical question will be why haven’t we been pursuing this policy for decades. Oh that’s right it’s because we’ve been lead by some very stupid corrupt sovereignty stealing boomers + ghwb. The evidence is now mani festing itself visavi president Trumps method

It’s a framing issue. I daresay DJT is not against free trade on an even playing field. But the field is anything but even. I’d love for him to say “I’m not against Free Trade; what I want is Fair Trade.”

Interesting how NYT doesn’t hesitate to use sweeping, poorly defined, controversial terms like “nationalist” but would never use “socialist” for obvious socialists like Obama.
