Good magazine/news source for a non-internet conservative?
April 20 2017 | me

Please pardon the vanity. I have a friend in his eighties but still healthy and active. Retired medical professional, active Christian, conservative Republican. His political knowledge level is rather low. He has an IPhone but has no regular internet access. He may just be too old to learn to use the internet.

He is very interested in political news. I have thought about suggesting a conservative print magazine to him. In past years, I read National Review when William F. Buckley was in charge, but I know that it is much less reliable now. Today, I get my news from the internet and do not follow the print magazines, papers much at all.

Pat Buchanan's American Conservative seems odd. Weekly Standard too cozy with the Left? John Birch Society's New American too conspiratorial.

I see this article still lists NR as the best conservative magazine:

Top 10 Conservative Magazines

Do others have better ideas on a print political news source for a conservative Christian? Thank you.

The Christian Science Monitor isn't conservative. It's not an awful publication but it's old Establishment Establishment.

Unless it's changed a lot, I'd stay away from Chronicles. They used to work in an article every month about how everything went wrong back when Abraham Lincoln was president, and that stuff gets old fast.

Human Events was always the nuts and bolts conservative publication that appealed to older folks. That might have been your best bet, but they're only on the Internet now. The paper version stopped coming out four years ago.

I'd say probably go with National Review or The Weekly Standard, bearing in mind that you or your pal will probably find an article or two in each issue you don't agree with. You might also show your friend the Commentary magazine website and see if he likes it.

If you want to go to the effort, you could likely do a “one to three paragraph text summary” of an assortment of stories, then print it out for him (large print). Select stories based on his tastes.

I did this for an older man I knew and found I could, on just 10 single sided pages, put more high quality news than someone surfing the net or reading newspapers and magazine could find in a week.

Among the better sources are:

Newsmax

CNS

Drudge Report

Bad Blue -

Orbusmax -

Carolina Plott Hound -

Rantburg (War on Terror news) -

Strategy Page (military news) -

Intelnews.org (spies and espionage) -

If you are interested in journals with a more in-depth and/or academic focus, I would recommend Modern Age, The Independent Review and Hoover Digest. Although its orientation is more neocon, Commentary is full of articles that are solidly researched and often appeal to traditional conservatives.

If you are seeking an online source for articles in back issues of periodicals across the political spectrum, surf over to Unz.org. Its interface is a bit clunky, and copyrighted material is unavailable, but I still find it to be a valuable resource.

Don’t rule out the internet for him.

My Mom is 83. Last year we got her an Amazon Kindle w Alexa. She’s been a stay at home housewife and has zero tech background. Now she reads Drudge headlines etc. to my Dad, checks email and I’m selling her on Free Republic.

If you can spend some time w your friend and show him the ropes, see if he’s interested and wants to learn. Many places have free Wi-Fi so he wouldn’t need to get connected until/unless he wanted.

It could open his world up.

BTW this was a GOOD vanity. Cheers!

Conservative Chronicle used to be a great resource. They reprinted like 50 conservative columnists a week. It was how I was introduced to Thomas Sowell, David Limbaugh and many others. I think they still publish a hard copy, but I haven’t subscribed in about 10 years.

Beyond those, there are three directions to go.

The first are opinion sites, like Townhall, The Heritage Foundation, The Cato Institute, Frontpage Magazine, National Review,

Right Wing News,

http://rightwingnews.com/

News With Views

https://newswithviews.com/

The Rumor Mill

http://www.rumormillnews.com/

The New American

https://www.thenewamerican.com/

The second direction are the international news sites, which are radically different from US news. There’s a ton of those.

And the third direction are specialized sites, for things like scientific and technological innovation, and reference sites for everything under the sun.
