Dan Rather was thrown out of Marine Boot Camp
The Coach's Team ^ | 4/15/17 | Glenn MacDonald

Major Glenn MacDonald USAR (Ret) continues his MilitaryCorruption.com expose of Dan Rather by explaining how the disgraced, former CBS Talking Head acquired a photo in a Marine dress blue uniform, complete with white saucer cap.

Dan Rather was tossed from the Marine Corps in 1954, yet the former news anchor has continued to claim that he is a Marine! Major MacDonald is having none of it. Ed.

EXCLUSIVE

THE DAN RATHER MARINE CORPS DECEPTION COMES UNDONE - MILITARYCORRUPTION.COM DISCOVERS ORIGIN OF HEADSHOT OF DISGRACED FORMER CBS NEWS ANCHORMAN WEARING DRESS BLUE UNIFORM WITH WHITE SAUCER CAP LIBERAL ICON USED PIX IN 2012 BOOK - CAPTION READS: "AS A YOUNG MARINE" - FALSE, AS RATHER FAILED TO GRADUATE FROM BOOT CAMP - "YOU CAN'T BE CALLED A MARINE UNTIL THEN, WHEN YOU'RE PINNED WITH THE GLOBE AND ANCHOR," OLD GUNNY SERGEANT TELLS US

After we ran our initial story about the Dan Rather deception, as to his military service, it didn't take long for our many Marine Corps readers to "sound off" as to whether or not Danny boy was one of "The few, the proud, the Marines." The resounding verdict was "HELL NO!"

In his 2012 book, RATHER OUTSPOKEN, the then 81 year-old liberal icon and disgraced former CBS anchorman didn't say word one about the Corps in the text, but shockingly in the photos section, there was a headshot of a smiling, young Dan wearing Marine dress blues, including the famed white saucer cap. With the shocking pix came the cutline: "As a young Marine."

Rather has written several biographical books over the past 40 years, but this was the first time the Texan climbed out on a limb and portrayed himself in print as a onetime member of the Corps. It was a risky move, as Dan knows he didn't graduate from boot camp. In our first Rather story, we quoted a Marine Corps League official as stating one must actually graduate from training to earn the coveted USMC emblem, the globe and anchor. Only then, can one be rightfully called a "Marine."

BIASED REPORTING

We bear no malice toward an old man, still traumatized after all these years by his failure to achieve such a manly goal. But Rather is proven a rank hypocrite when it comes to his intense criticism of former Vice-President Dan Quayle or President George W. Bush (no friend of ours).

Quayle's powerful daddy helped him get him a safe spot in the Army National Guard during the Vietnam War and it is safe to say the first President George Bush (WWII Navy pilot) did the same for his dim-witted son. At least "Dubya" learned how to fly a F-102 jet plane. He was a commissioned officer, while Dan Rather knew deep in his Democrat heart he hadn't made it through basic raining.

We quoted B. J. Burkett, author of STOLEN VALOR, as saying his study of what records he could obtain of Rather's brief time in the Corps. indicated he never completed boot camp and was "medically discharged" on May 11, 1954. It must have been a miserable bus ride back to Texas for Dan, as the yet-to-become famous and fabulously wealthy network anchorman contemplated a bleak future.

But, if he washed out at Parris Island, S.C., how does that square with the photo of smiling Dan wearing a dress uniform blue tunic and white cap, as if he was all rarin' to go fight the Commies? We scratched our heads and wondered if a disconsolate Dan had the snapshot taken privately, in any of the many photo shops of Beaufort, S.C. where all sorts of Marine uniforms and caps were available for rent or purchase.

THE REAL ORIGIN OF THE DRESS UNIFORM PIX

The answer, in our EXCLUSIVE copyrighted story here, is as follows:

A certain very senior Marine NCO, long-retired, but around at the same time as Rather, tells us the real story:

"I was a recruit at the P.I. in the early 50's, and you didn't dare call yourself a Marine until you've rightfully pinned the globe and anchor on your collar upon graduation from boot camp.

"As for the photo you ran (on MCC), here's the likely explanation. It was probably posed for the yearbook we all got when we became Marines and went on to further training at Camp Lejuene or elsewhere. All of us had our head shots taken. They'd put a blues blouse on you and a white cover on your head, then snap the photo. Whoever failed to graduate, had their photo shit-canned."

Or, at least, that's what was supposed to happen. Obviously, somehow Dan got possession of the pix and waited nearly 60 years to dare publish it in RATHER OUTSPOKEN.

The intent is obvious, even without the incriminating cutline "As a young Marine." The vast majority of folks seeing the smiling face of Dan Rather wearing such a sacred uniform would think that Rather MUST have been a Jarhead. There he is in a USMC dress uniform. They had no way to know it was a lie.

DOES DAN HAVE TROUBLE TELLING THE TRUTH?

Which brings us to some of the other problems Rather has had with the truth over the years. Whether it was walking out on the start of his own CBS EVENING NEWS broadcast in 1988 because he was irked a tennis match was running overtime, or getting snippy with Nixon at a press conference or old man Bush in a live interview, controversy has followed Rather wherever he has been. "What's the frequency, Kenneth?"

CBS ended up firing the aging anchorman some ten years ago when he came up short on proof that then-President George Bush was AWOL from National Guard duty in the early 1970's. One might call what Rather did reckless - kind of like deliberately running a deceptive photo of himself in a mass-publication book.

Dan's former CBS NEWS colleague Bernie Goldberg is on record as saying Rather claimed he not only enlisted in the Marines once (1954) but had joined up two times! A check of the record by investigator B.J. Burkett shows that Rather was wrong. He'd been part of an Army Reserve unit during the Korean War, while fellow students at Sam Houston University in Texas were facing the draft and a quick trip to the fighting zone.

A PSYCHIATRIST MIGHT BE NEEDED HERE

It would probably take a headshrinker to figure out why Rather remains haunted by his far-ago failure. It's sad to see him at 85, interviewed on the left-leaning propaganda network MSNBC attacking President Donald Trump non-stop from the day he took office. Of course, famed newsman Dan has made a career of attacking only Republicans. If you, dear reader, can come up with the name of any prominent Democrats he has skewered, we'll send you 100 of our MilitaryCoruption.com bumper stickers. They're an exact reproduction of our MCC masthead.

We have been equally critical of BOTH parties - Democrats and Republicans - on these pages over the past 17 years. From editorializing early on against the needless war in Iraq, to calling for arrogant Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to be fired and sleazy Dick "Halliburton" Cheney exposed, we have pierced the pomposity of fakers like John Kerry and dared discuss Barak Hussein Obama's penchant for patronizing a certain men's establishment in Chicago back in his gay old "community organizer" days.

No one gets a free pass here. If you screw the troops or your hurt this nation, we're gonna come after you, no matter how powerful and above the law you think you may be. The pen is still mightier than the sword.

[MilitaryCorruption.com EDITOR'S NOTE: -- If doddering old Dan can prove he actually graduated boot camp and was a bonafide Marine, we offer to profusely apologize on these pages. All we ask of him is that he help us tell "the rest of the story" by signing SF 180 which would release ALL of his military records so we can see for sure what the actual reason was the Corps dumped him for being "medically unfit." That term was used to cover all sorts of situations - all the way from being a bed-wetter or homosexual (a big no-no in the Joe McCarthy 1950's) - to a broken leg or some serious injury or allergy. If we had to guess the truth, the answer likely (pardon the pun) "lies" somewhere in between.]

One of my nephews was injured during Marine Corps basic training, severely enough to be medically discharged. I’ve never heard him claim to be a former Marine, only to express regret that he was not able to serve.

At least you tried. A lot of my generation ran to Canada. I still won’t have anything to do with those who ran.

Sure looks like the picture they take of you in boot camp. I still have mine. But I did make it through boot camp and I did serve out my entire enlistment and I was honorably discharged. Semper Fidelis. Except for Dan. He’s just a pathetic cretin.

At Ft. Knox, in the summer of 1973, we were marched to one of the old WW2 buildings, like we lived in while in basic, were told to find a shirt, jacket, and hat that fit, put it on, with tie, and get our photograph taken. As you we got the packet at the end of basic and some amount was deducted from our pay for it. I still have the photo from the packet I gave my mother all those decades ago and she kept in a frame in her house.

Show us the DD Form 214, Dan, of your service.

That one might be harder to forge—my Dad’s, which I found for his funeral service, and from active duty service in the US Army in the mid 1950’s was reverse printed. The image has the normal paper background being black and the letters on the form appearing as white. It looks almost like an x-ray. Don’t know if the USMC had the same or not.

Ah, the old Plattsburgh AFB. It is now Plattsburgh International Airport.

I flew in there a couple of years ago - I think it was via a regional USAirways plane.

After we landed we had to taxi about two miles. Because it was a SAC base it needed the long runway. Whoever sold the government all that cement made a lot of money.

“Dan Is D Man.....maybe NOT......you know Mike Tyson could not complete boot camp either”
That wasn’t Mike Tyson, it was Riddick Bowe, who joined the Marines, but ducked out of boot camp in a few days.

That sounds like the old way they had of making copies prior to Xerox machines.

My birth certificate is like that. Totally black background and white letters.

After WWII, it was common for soldiers to take their DD214s to the courthouse and have them recorded for convenience. They would look like that.

When I ETS’d, they told us to record our DD214’s at the county so we could always get a real copy in case we lost ours.

There’s no shame in washing out of boot camp in the Marines. The USMC is sonetthing very special and not everyone can make it, myself first on the list. If the beloved Corps called me to tomorrow and said “Son, it’s your turn to serve” I’d pick up my rifle and serve proudly. But I’m quite sure that the corps has no interest in me. So all I can give them is the deep respect that I have for those who do serve.

The problem here is when you claim that you were a Marine when you’re not. Until the eagle, glove and anchor adorn your collar, you aren’t part of the Corps. Claiming you are is, quite simply, stolen valor.

Rather was, at one time, a top-notch journalist. But he turned into a person who let his own opinions and politics get in the way of fair and balanced journalism, and that shames everyone who IS a journalist, myself included. I have covered many stories where I have a strong personal opinion, but you would never guess that from my reporting or editing. Rather lost that and it was long past time for him to leave the craft.

Why the vast majority of Journalists are liberal I haven’t a clue. But I have known many who, like me, are fiercely defensive of their devotion to balanced reporting. The profession that gave us Murrow and Sevareid must not have people who can’t tell the WHOLE story.

From Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Rather#Early_career

"In 1954, Rather enlisted in the United States Marine Corps but was soon discharged because he had rheumatic fever as a child."

Referenced quote from:http://www.notablebiographies.com/news/Ow-Sh/Rather-Dan.html

"Rather served a brief stint in the U.S. Marine Corps, but when his superior officers learned about his childhood bout with rheumatic fever, he was disqualified for military service for health reasons."

Right after Ivy League access, one thing the rich and powerful pay for is sanitized military discharge records, that their Senators demand.

When I was in Parris Island, I also had my picture taken in dress blues (actually just the jacket and cap) while still in boot camp. I forget what week it was but it was probably around the middle of boot camp when many had yet to "wash out."

I'm surprised that Dan Rather was able to get that picture if he never graduated.
