It’s because of the culture of oneupmanship. Each generation has to find itself a fresh way to rebel and act out and it has to be stranger than the last generation’s tactics.
Both my boys ended up rebelling by being vocal conservatives.
It had the same effect on teachers that showing up with a Mohawk and earing would have had when I was a kid.
