Gareth Southgate prepared for his first game as permanent England manager by insisting foundations are now in place to narrow the gap on their opponents Germany - but warned the country's "island" mentality must end.
England's 3-2 win over the World Cup holders in Berlin last March left then manager Roy Hodgson proclaiming his "finest moment" in charge - only to resign in June after a humiliating last-16 exit to Iceland at Euro 2016.
Southgate, who replaced Hodgson's successor Sam Allardyce after an unbeaten four-game run in interim charge, faces a stern test in Dortmund on Wednesday before a World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley on Sunday.

Still always find it hard to believe he is THIRD in all time German Nat. team goal scorers though, ahead of guys like Voller and Rummenigge - even Klinsman.

England’s 1-0 defeat in Dortmund was marred by supporters booing the German national anthem, outstretching their arms to mimic fighter planes and spending large parts of the night going through a repertoire of songs about the first and second world wars. The FA is now liaising with the UK Football Policing Unit about going through the video footage to see if it is possible to identify any member of the England Supporters Travel Club who might have been involved with a view to potentially banning them.
It’s all well and good issuing banning orders for being drunk at a game back home, but there are some seriously disgusting people that are still allowed to associate themselves with the travelling fan base.’
