Actually that’s what reporters are SUPPOSED to do - which is to ask the person being attacked to confirm/deny the authenticity of the returns - since if they don’t deny it (as in this case), then the report has much more authority.
Of course that leaves the target free to jump the gun and leak it...but that’s the risk.
Or, of course, he already knew which return it is because he had it leaked to (her).
