Glock19 vs Sig Sauer1911 - Torture Test
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 3/15/2017 | J Hines

There has been a lot of buzz on the internet lately about the reliability of a 1911 platform as a self defense pistol.

For a quick torture test DRF (DownRange Firearms) Training took a Sig Sauer 1911 and my personal Glock 19, buried them in the dirt, actions open, cleared the dirt and debris from the guns and proceeded to fire the guns testing their reliability.

Results
The Glock performed flawlessly, the 1911, as expected, failed miserably. Glocks shot off all 15 rounds where the Sig only came up with 2 shots fired. We had fun with this one and hope you guys enjoy it!

DRFTraining used factory fresh Remington UMC 230gr .45 and Federal 115gr 9mm, no hand loads.

For anyone who wants to know EXACTLY what happened to the 1911…To clean it we had to strip it down to the empty frame.

Dirt was located in the sear, trigger, grip safety, mag release, hammer and there was a pebble jammed under the leaf spring. See the Glock19 vs Sig1911 footage here.

Both are fine pistols and this toture test was designed to make the 1911 fail. I would suggest a new test. Put both pistols in an oven at 500 degrees for an hour and let them cool down. The 1911 will go bang. The Glock will be mostly melted due to its polymer frame.

As mentioned both are fine weapons and the torture test was crap.

There is no place in the modern world for firearms discrimination, diversity is strength!

What happens when a block decides it's transgender, though?

Not really. First of all, I have probably shot as much ammo through a 1911 as anyone here, definitely in excess of 200,000 rounds. I have two much-modified 1911’s, an Ed Brown worked Series 70, and another no-name Colt. I like them.

That said, a box-stock Glock and a box-stock 1911 is no contest. The Glock wins. I also have a Glock 30 .45 ACP that I have carried for years, and have shot 30-5- rounds a week, with whatever ammo is cheap, as well as reloads. The total failures to feed, fire, or eject is 0. It has had nothing done but the lighter trigger connector.

It is pretty much like the AKM/AR15 contest, in rough conditions, the AKM will win. I’d still much rather shoot the more accurate, more ergonomic AR15. That said, the only two always-loaded firearms in my house are the Glock and the AKM.

If you test a Glock and a stock Colt in the real world, the Colt will still lose, and I love the 1911’s!

You can jam any gun, including revolvers, with dirt in the right spot. That is why I don’t bury my guns. That, and because I cannot think of ANY reason to do so...

So, the 1911 was buried under dirt AND a pebble.

You don't have to bury all guns.

If you do bury a gun, what you will have when you dig it up is a gun that needs cleaning. If you don't bury a gun all you will have when you dig is dirt.

Probably why they buried them with actions open. A pebble might have set the Glock off if were buried loaded.

I think I read that also somewhere, but when I purchased it the Seals still
carried it and the P226-Navy is based on the version they carried.

The 226 is the only pistol thats ever felt better going off and recoiling in
my hand than the 1911 or my Hi-Power.

I agree...the weight of it dampens the recoil to the point where you feel
like you are shooting a a much smaller caliber.

The trigger is atrocious for such a highend handgun, IMHO. Understanding that it's somewhat the nature of the beast in a SADA gun, it still could have been a little bit less mushy.

That said, pretty much all stock triggers are garbagey these days...Designed by lawyers I guess. Best trigger I've ever felt was on a Japanese Type 14 Nambu...No mush at all, nice and light.
