BMW supplier Gestamp North America announced Wednesday it will invest $129 million and boost its workforce by a third with 130 jobs new jobs in an expansion of its Union County facility.
The growth is needed to meet an increased demand in business from the automotive industry, S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster said in a statement.
“We are very excited about this project, our partnership and the confidence they have in our community,” Union County Supervisor Frank Hart stated. “This major industrial expansion is a testament to the fact that Union County is a great place to locate, operate and expand industrial operations.”
McMaster's office announced the company will add more than 300,000 square of space to its existing operations at 1 LSP Road in Union.
Gestamp, with nearly 400 employees in Union, plans to start filling the new 130 positions in the second quarter of 2018.
An international manufacturer of metal automotive components, Gestamp's customers include BMW and Volvo in South Carolina. Worldwide, it operates 98 manufacturing plants in 21 countries.
“This new project multiplies our size in South Carolina with a remarkable investment that shows how committed we are with our future operations at the Union County plant,” Gestamp North America CEO Jeff Wilson said in a statement. "The United States is a strategic market for us, where we have six plants in five different states, and we want to grow in this country with the major car manufacturers. This is an important step forward.”
Gestamp supplies steel parts such as door hatches, hoods and fenders used in the manufacture of vehicles at BMW.
BMW is in the midst of a $1 billion expansion that includes a new 1.2 million-square-foot body shop, which is equivalent in size of the original plant built in Spartanburg County in 1994.
Founded in 1997, Gestamp began supplying BMW with parts for its X6 sports activity coupe in 2007.
Two years later, the company added 40 new positions to coincide with the launch of the next generation X3. In 2011, Gestamp announced plans to invest $50 million and create 100 jobs with a 150,000-square-foot addition in Union.
