Seriously, how deluded some people are to think they can pull this kind of stuff off on a national stage, and not get found out.

Your not thinking clearly. Sure now that Trump is president it is easy to think they did something stupid, but remember they thought that their actions would keep Trump out and with Hillary as POTUS this would all be swept under the rug and nobody would care.
They didn’t care about getting found out AFTER they accomplished their goal.
You’re probably right. What a sad existence these people must live (internally anyway).
