Popeyes sold to Burger King parent for $1.8 billion

Love that Chicken from... Ontario?

Restaurant Brands International Inc. (NYSE: QSR) will buy Atlanta-based Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Inc. (NASDAQ: PLKI) for $1.8 billion. Popeyes shareholders will get $79 in cash a share at closing -- a premium of 27 percent based on Popeyes’ 30-trading day Volume Weighted Average Price as of Feb. 10.

The deal, expected to close by early April 2017, brings the New Orleans spicy chicken brand to the Ontario, Canada-based company that owns Burger King and Tim Hortons.

Popeyes will continue to be managed independently in the United States. RBI plans to continue developing the brand at an increasing pace in the United States and international markets.

Al Copeland Sr. started the fried chicken chain in New Orleans in 1972. The brand found success quickly and developed a fan following for other items such as buttermilk biscuits, red beans and rice and popcorn shrimp and crawfish. Popeyes now has more than 2,600 restaurants in the United States and 25 other countries. It will complement RBI’s portfolio of more than 20,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries and U.S. territories.

“I am proud of the superior results the Popeyes team has delivered in recent years; they have served all stakeholders well,” Popeyes CEO Cheryl Bachelder said in a statement. “As Popeyes enters its 45th year, its success reflects the amazing brand entrusted to us by founder Al Copeland Sr. and the unique high trust partnership that we enjoy with our franchise owners. RBI has observed our success and seen the opportunity for exceptional future unit growth in the U.S. and around the world.”

LOL!

If you frequent any of these places, you can see the good managers; they’re often behind the counter training new people, or just coming out to observe; or even going around cleaning tables and tidying up. A nice place usually has an energetic manager. The problem is, they don’t stay long - I guess they move up.

Could be location and worker pool. Not to mention management. Around here, most of the ones are more central township I.ie., inner city. If they’re any out in the burbs, I haven’t seen, or been to one.

CF’A on the other hand, seems to me more professionally run, regardless of location. I’m sure corporate has a rigid vetting process for prospective franchisees.

I believe Popeyes is predominantly a black enterprise. I recall Burger King being run by predominantly black managers executive / store owners.

I recall late 80’s early 90’s Jesse Jackson pushing Burger King to go black.

I have never been there, but I assumed that the place sold watermelon slices because of the commercials.

I must be a racist. Oh, wait...I’m white and voted for Trump so, of course I am by default, a racist.

All this PC crap needs to go the way of disco music.

Most of the Popeyes chain in Buffalo NY are run by. . . (ahem) “immigrants.”

We’re in the suburbs of DC, and in recent years the folks who work in Popeye’s seem to all come from the Caribbean or Africa.

At any rate, my location is very well-run.

The food is good but the service, at least by me is horrific

Yeah they dont mind making bank on exploiting black stereotypes. I wonder how many of them cannot see the racism in the commercials. She may as well be shucking and jiving and doing a dance.

How do they compare to Chick Fil A?

Plain compared to Popeyes. Popeyes is real spicy chicken. I go there often, like it with the red beans and other sides. I stopped going to KFC a decade ago when their quality went way down. Chick Fil A is okay, but ordinary compared to the spicy stuff I like at Popeyes.

You can order non spicy chicken as well. I’m from New Orleans and have been eating Popeyes for years.

One of my boys in finance told me it was going to be a “tender offer.”

Nyuk, nyuk.

I wonder how many of them cannot see the racism in the commercials.

Well that's the huge difference. If their spokesperson was white, it would be beaucoup racist. But since black people, by default, can't be racist...

I didn’t see those ads as racist; I just saw it as a play on Southern Black hospitality, home cooking, etc.

Good and bad experiences at Popeyes. A visit to the one in Panama City, Florida was horrible. Idiots working the counter caused a simple order to take over 30 minutes to be filled.

Someone else recommended Costco’s chickens to me; we get the same thing at the grocery, but not for that price. It’s a great thing to make a “real” meal on a weeknight, without a lot of work.

I guess we’ve just got a good one. We’ve been going there for nine years, and haven’t had a complaint.

The only con is that they don’t deliver - we’re in a ‘dead zone’ for delivery food, and it would be nice. But I guess that can’t be worked into the model for a place like Popeye’s.

I must have eaten at different Popeyes’ dozens of times, and I adore the chix, slaw, and roll special.
