Trump's Opening Act Is More Conservative Than Reagan

Politics: During the primaries and the presidential campaign, Donald Trump rarely described himself as a conservative. But his appointments and his initial actions as president have turned out to be as about as right wing as it gets.

Trump over the years has earned a healthy amount of skepticism from conservatives, including from this page.

National Review, in its editorial denouncing Trump early in the primary season, called him "a menace to American conservatism who would take the work of generations and trample it underfoot in behalf of a populism as heedless and crude as the Donald himself."

We asked at one point whether Trump was a "common-sense conservative" — as he described himself — or "just mostly liberal." When Trump secured the nomination, we argued that "Republicans have managed to pick the least reliably conservative candidate out of a field that started with some of the most experienced, dedicated and successful conservatives ever to have thrown their hats into the ring."

But since winning the election, Trump has acted more conservative than Ronald Reagan.

IBD went #neverTrumper on us. I guess they’re trying to gloss that over.

Although there’s nothing wrong with Trump blowing Reagan out of the water.

“I have never been so happy about being wrong in my life.
I voted against Hillary!, not for Trump.
I figured Trump was a former Democrat, and that everything he said was up for negotiation. I didn’t believe a thing he said.
But I have pleasantly surprised. He’s working hard to deliver than I could have ever imagined.
That is a benefit of being a pessimist - your surprises are mostly pleasant ones.”

Welcome aboard the Trump Train!!

It is a shame the presidency has this much power. However, Congress has ceded too much power to the administration branch. The individual departments (EPA, IRS) are in Democrat control except at the top. The current situation underscores that the Federal government has too much power.

I can’t wait for Trump to tackle the IRS. Hope Lerner goes to jail. Better than Hillary in some respects as it shows some of the administrative employees can go to jail.

The National Review will fail and the paper it was once printed on will be used for buttwipe. Sorry to see William Buckleys legacy go that way but his successors made the wrong choice.

It is simply not true that IBD “went #neverTrumper.” IBD has never endorsed, or unendorsed, a presidential candidate, including Trump.

As a conservative editorial page, our concern with Trump has always been that he wasn’t a true conservative. We made this clear during the primaries. When Trump strayed from conservatism, we criticized him. When he pushed conservative policies, we praised him. Thus, given his opening act as president, we are praising him.

Nor are we trying to gloss anything over, since the editorial directly links to previous IBD editorials critical of Trump.

To say that you were critical of Trump understates the case, I think. "Batsh*t insane" is how I would describe the editorial that caused me to cancel my corporate subscription. The tone was less "We disagree with Trump" than "Trump is dangerous."

I used to have a WSJ subscription; their editorial position on illegal immigrants brought that to an end.
