Herbal And Dietary Supplements—Buyer Beware
Canada Free Press ^ | 01/19/17 | Jack Dini

Posted on 01/19/2017 10:58:30 AM PST by Sean_Anthony

Of the fifty-one thousand products introduced since 1994, only 170 (0.3 percent) have any documentation of their safety

Americans spend more than $32 billion a year on more than 85,000 different combinations of vitamins, minerals, botanicals, amino acids, probiotics, and other supplement ingredients. 1

While it costs millions of dollars to develop and substantiate a pharmaceutical product, selling supplements requires no such investment. And new products are easily sold as supplements. The only common feature among them, as defined by the FDA, is that these are edible things not intended to treat, diagnose, prevent or cure diseases. However, this is why people take them. 2

There is only one “herbal” worth anything. And if you live in Colorado its legal.

Yeah, like FDA approval means it’s actually safe or works.

The original VIOXX estimated deaths were about 50k. This has recently upgraded to about 500k deaths. IIOXX was fined but nobody went to jail

Mr. mm and I have found a few that we find effective.

One is Fenugreek for congestion and thinning out mucous in the lungs.

The second is Valerian as a muscle relaxant.

The third is Arnica Gel for muscle aches.

And last is Ephedrine, which does clear you out but makes you as wired as anything I ever took, including prednisone.

Anyone notice that every drug that promotes itself on tv commercials eventually ends up getting sued out of existence?

This article has the smell of big pharma Pharmakeia $$$ all over it. The record of prescription drugs causing adverse side effects, sickness, poisoning, toxicity, overdosing, and death is long and large.

I spent years recommending fish oil and taking it myself. Research now shows taking the fish oil does not provide the cardioprotective effect that eating fish does.

I now eat fish (not my favorite) and stopped the fish oil.

I attended a training event before the Vioxx debacle, a lawyer spent an hour explaining that with the decreased GI risk of Vioxx, there would be a time in the near future Cox-2 drugs would be the standard of care and we would be committing malpractice prescribing traditional NSAIDs. Supposedly he was not industry affiliated.

It was less than a year later Vioxx and others were off the market.

“Research now shows taking the fish oil does not provide the cardioprotective effect that eating fish does.”

While other research shows that it does, and most brands are mercury-free - unlike most fish.

As long as you are eating relatively small fish, there is absolutely nothing to worry about with respect to mercury (in fact, the vast majority of the mercury scare is probably unwarranted). But sardines, jack mackerel, etc. are perfectly fine, and much better for you than just the oil.

Ephedrine is one of the greatest weight loss supplements EVER.
It was banned under good old W Bush. Course, he had a dem running the FDA.

The FDA is one of the most corrupt agencies in the country. Canada Free Press is losing credibility here.

Of course, the article conveniently forgets this: very often a new drug from big pharma is developed based on naturally occurring botanicals. Once the drug (overpriced) is introduced, big pharma does all it can to discredit the natural plant material that pharma attempts to mimic through chemistry.

There’s a huge supplements industry in UT. They have bough Orrin hatch which has kept herbal supplements unregulated and free to make whatever BS claim they want.

I don't want the fed regulating the supplement industry. Our health crisis and obesity problem in this country can be laid at the feet of government. The low-fat dictate ushered in the diabetes epidemic and a whole hose of other medical problems. I supplement. It saved my life. However, I've researched and studied extensively to get to this point of my being healthy.

The only thing the government could do is totally f*ck up a good thing.

Comparing vitamins to pharmaceuticals is just plain foolish. Sophisticated chemical compounds designed to combat complex diseases are not analogous to vitamins and other supplements in any way.

Unlike with prescription and over-the-counter drugs, dietary supplements do not have to be proven safe or effective before they can be marketed. They can make any claim they want to make about their product and don't even have to include a list of ingredients or the quantity of biologically active ingredients in each dose. But those supplement guys aren't like big bad pharma guys now, are they? They wouldn't lie about the efficacy of their product. And I'm certain, that with them, you're getting exactly what you pay for.

Sure.

The revolving door of corruption between the FDA and Pharma rivals the better known situation of the DOD revolving door. When you factor in the fact that half of medical research results are bogus and the inhuman destruction carried out by Pharma in Africa it makes Pharma possibly the most evil corrupt industry on Earth. How can Pharma not know that thens of opoids shipped to Mexico are destined for the US black market?

The record of prescription drugs causing adverse side effects, sickness, poisoning, toxicity, overdosing, and death is long and large

The next time you come down with a MRSA infection be sure to take large doses of vitamin C instead of Xyvox. Let me know how that works out for ya. If you are ever so unfortunate as to come down with chronic myelogenous leukemia, will you treat it with high doses of B complex vitamins or with Gleevec? Let me know how using riboflavin to treat that migraine works for you instead of that tryptamine based drug.

There's a reason sophisticated drug therapies come with higher risks than simple supplements that may or may not even include the ingredients indicated. That's because actually treating complex diseases is hard. Merely pretending your product effectively treats specific maladies is easy.

It's nonsensical to point out and compare the risks of pharmaceuticals to vitamins and other supplements. Those placebos are much safer as well.....and cheap!
