Why rural America voted for Trump

KNOXVILLE, Iowa – One recent morning, I sat near two young men at a coffee shop here whom I’ve known since they were little boys. Now about 18, they pushed away from the table, and one said: “Let’s go to work. Let the liberals sleep in.” The other nodded.

They’re hard workers. As a kid, one washed dishes, took orders and swept the floor at a restaurant. Every summer, the other picked sweet corn by hand at dawn for a farm stand and for grocery stores, and then went to work all day on his parents’ farm. Now one is a welder, and the other is in his first year at a state university on an academic scholarship. They are conservative, believe in hard work, family, the military and cops, and they know that abortion and socialism are evil, that Jesus Christ is our savior, and that Donald J. Trump will be good for America.

They are part of a growing movement in rural America that immerses many young people in a culture – not just conservative news outlets but also home and church environments – that emphasizes contemporary conservative values. It views liberals as loathsome, misinformed and weak, even dangerous.

Who are these rural, red-county people who brought Mr. Trump into power? I’m a native Iowan and reporter in rural Marion County, Iowa. I consider myself fairly liberal. My family has mostly voted Democratic since long before I was born. To be honest, for years, even I have struggled to understand how these conservative friends and neighbors I respect – and at times admire – can think so differently from me, not to mention how over 60 percent of voters in my county could have chosen Mr. Trump....

You are calling me a liberal?

No, I'm just quoting from the article. Why do you take everything I post personally?

What a nut. He has no idea, and he writes with disdain for his fellow citizens. I’m thinking the liberals will never get a grasp on why Trump won.

Just did some research and found I made a big mistake.Turns out that The Former Twelfth Lady won something like 60 of the nation's 3,000+ counties.

The burbs don’t count.
We only ‘sort of’ understand the rural lifestyle; but we do get up early to get the kids off to school and to get to work.
We’re sort of a battle ground between rural and urban.

What a smarmy, condescending, liberal pr*ck. He doesn't get it and never will.

Democrats free gitmo terrorists while declaring war on cops. Liberals demand we accept 57 genders and uncle pervy following your 6 year old daughter into the bathroom. The Left uses Islam as a hedge against Christianity, while claiming to be offended by religion.

Listen up, moron. Trump won because Hillary is criminal drunken liar whose party is unabashedly anathema to America and the Constitution..

These clowns need to go to rural America to find people like this?

I grew up in the city. Did those things as well. Had a paper route too. Dad was a roofer, I was climbing ladders when I was 10.

They want to pretend I don’t exist or that I am anomaly living in their world.

“The difference between Republicans and Democrats is that Republicans believe people are fundamentally bad, while Democrats see people as fundamentally good,” said Watts, who was in the area to campaign for Sen. Rand Paul.”

Democrats, once again, attempt to narrow right down to some simplistic thought the complex reasons the vast majority of the country has turned red.

“In this view, blue counties are where most of our tax dollars are spent, and that’s where all of our laws are written and passed. To rural Americans, sometimes it seems our taxes mostly go to making city residents live better. We recognize that the truth is more complex, particularly when it comes to social programs, but it’s the perception that matters – certainly to the way most people vote.”

And once again, the left’s perception of all things right is off the mark.

So long as the left continues its analysis FROM THE LEFT’S VIEWPOINT, they will continue to lose.

“Some of what liberals worry about they see as pure nonsense. When you are the son or daughter of a carpenter or mechanic and a housewife or secretary who lives paycheck to paycheck, who can’t afford to send kids to college, as many rural residents are, white privilege is meaningless and abstract.”

White privilege is meaningless. It’s a leftist construct to continue racial flogging in the US.

Does the author really think that none of these children of the lowly working class go to college, albeit unremarkable schools not in the Ivy league, according the left? Parents work to place these children in universities and do not appreciate paying for the constant hate-Whitey agenda.

“The Republican brand is strong in rural America – perhaps even strong enough to withstand a disastrous Trump presidency”

But, the left has already decided Trump has failed. Conservatives not only did not riot, demonstrate, threaten and assault Obama voters when he won, but they agreed to give him a chance to govern.

The left is so taken by their entitled sense of righteousness in all things, they refuse to entertain any thought that Trump could do well and are hell-bound and determined to see him fail disregarding any will of the people and damage to the republic.

Rioting and demonstrating, impeding the Inauguration and attempting to destroy this Administration will lead to more and more losses on the left.

They left cannot see beyond their own shuttered minds and tunnel vision.

I heard Dennis Prager discuss this. I thought it was a pretty good article. Maybe the writer still doesn’t quite get it, but at least he didn’t do the usual “racist, sexist, homophobe, xenophobe, uneducated, unwashed yahoo” routine. That’s a big step in the right direction.

I grew up in a small town of less than 900 people in the Midwest and this article is pure BS. While that background influenced my conservative thinking, I do not regard myself as one of the country bumpkins the author assumes populate flyover country. Perhaps despite my graduate degree, fluency in French, studying abroad and years as a college professor I remain a staunch conservative. There are many like me in flyover country...we are not all knuckle dragging cretins clinging to our guns and religion that those in east and west coast liberal la-la lands assume us to be. It is not us who live in an isolated bubble separated from reality it is them.

What doomed Hillary was her liberal smugness....we the elites know what is best for you...and that tired rant of "fighting" for every group that is seen as a perpetual victim of something or someone. Other than in liberal enclaves that message doesn't play well especially in middle America. Liberals have forgotten history especially the Reagan landslide elections. Americans of all but the most liberal stripe were galvanized by Reagan's simple vision of America being a shinning city on a hill with the best days yet to come and a message that big government is not the solution but the problem. Trump captured that vision with make America great again.

Liberals do not comprehend that their concept of elitists making all the decisions because the vast majority are too stupid to make the "right" decisions in their lives is contrary to what most Americans believe and that those Americans just gave them middle finger.

you need to understand how and why altruism, collectivism, statism, and socialism are so irrational, and thus evil

To rural Americans, sometimes it seems our taxes mostly go to making city residents live better. We recognize that the truth is more complex, particularly when it comes to social programs, but it’s the perception that matters – certainly to the way most people vote.

There seems to be an element of "rural folks are mad that they aren't getting their share of the loot", which almost every conservative would see as completely incorrect. Rural folks are morally offended that "the loot" is being redistributed at all. Government should not be in the business of taking money from people who produce and using it for anything other than government's proper role.

“...rural folk are shrinking minority and nearly incomprehensible to city folk.”

The number of city folk are shrinking by the tens of millions and has been for decades. Rural has been reclassified by demographers as exurbia and that area has been growing by the tens of millions for years.

Yes, she is a drunken criminal liar who is above the law and she is a thief and everything she has done is not subject to close scrutiny in terms of honesty...even her own child is not her husband’s. She is as far as I can tell totally reprehensible. I would never have voted for her.

But more important than her personal morality, I wanted an ethical president, one who sees and loves this nation with all its beauty and warts for what it is, a long and sorta proud history, a nation of strivers, workers who love to produce and who are proud of what they make and sell and grow and create. DJT, willing to combat a really stupid congress and imbecilic Democrats and many Republicans, is going to create or recreate conditions where we can succeed again.

Additionally,

I doubt many of us want vast riches but we do want our kids and grandkids to be safe...Trump’s willingness to close the friggen borders is a highly desired outcome of unmitigated flow of peoples across our borders. I want each and everyone of those immigrants to be so well vetted I would feel safe inviting them into my home on the edge of a road. I know the Democrats and Republicans almost to a person live behind gates with guards. They have chauffeurs...I drive alone alot. Living here I have a permit to carry and I do. What a way to live.

I hope DJT is not assassinated before he achieves his and my hopes. I pray for his success and I will do what I can to help him achieve it.

Ok, I read the whole article. To boil it down, the guy sees the reason for the differences and because he just can’t accept them because those reasons clash with his world view, he now struggles to find reasons why Conservative Americans must be wrong.

I get the feeling that if he was to accept the reasons given by J.C. Watts then he feels he would be repudiating his whole heritage as a Democrat and a liberal. And he just can’t do that.
