Trump has a secret weapon on jobs and trade
CNN Opinion ^ | January 3, 2017 | Paul Sracic

Ford Motor announced Tuesday that it would not invest in new manufacturing operations in Mexico, and instead would create 700 new jobs in Michigan. This follows on the heels of a similar announcement by the United Technologies unit, Carrier, in November that it would save hundreds of jobs at an Indiana plant, and not move them to Mexico.

These moves did not take place in a vacuum. In each case, the companies faced an implicit, and sometimes explicit, threat from President-elect Donald Trump.

And it will be fascinating to watch what GM ultimately does in response to Trump's tweet Tuesday slamming the company's practice of selling some Chevy Cruze hatchbacks in the US that have been produced in Mexico, especially since GM recently announced plans to lay off potentially 1,200 workers from its Lordstown, Ohio, production line, where the sedan version of the Cruze is manufactured....

The Bushes, Obama and Clinton could've done the same thing.

Another “secret” is clearly spelled out in the Constitution. Congress has the authority to regulate international trade.

So far the auto industry seems surprisingly sensitive to having a spotlight shown on their Mexican factories. They likely have been anticipating that their outsourcing would become a major issue. Do they feel guilty? Trump needs to stay on them.

I am reading legal articles that give two examples of executive authority ( totally unfettered) on presidential tariffs. Obama raised a 30% 3 year tariff on tires specifically from CHIIIINAAA. Bush slappe a general 10% tariff on ant steel imports!!
TRUMP CAN DO THIS Alone!!

Not surprising coming from GM. This is not the GM we used to know, this is the New Progressive GM built by Obama and the democrats.

Corporate America is more stampede-y and group-thinky than any high school clique. Once a few more players bring it back home because of Trump, it’ll become a tsunami.. by Apr. 1

Congress has the authority to regulate international trade.

But the real power they have is to influence outcomes for a price.

The US Auto Industry needs the Federal Government to be realistic with the CAFE standards.

The Bushes, Obama and Clinton could've done the same thing.

They worked really, really hard on trade policies that did the opposite and created or worsened the problems Trump is trying to reverse.

A price that should favor the American worker, not foreign slave shops that have no labor laws to protect their own workers.

Our Congress has been bought and sold by the globalist Free Traders thru K Street for decades to keep tariffs at near zero rate. So don't give em that BS.

There is no rational way to explain the trade deficits the USA has had and the current near suicidal zero rate tariff schedule other then calling it what is it is: collusion and corruption at the highest level.

Actually he is helping them. With Trump’s new world, these future facilities would never be as profitable as they had anticipated. Build where it makes financial sense, + get some good will.

The corp bigwigs know Trump will get things done as he said. They can be with him or against him.

Yep - grew up a GM guy but these days, if I were to buy American, I'd go with Ford.
