I've never worked on the oil rigs myself, but those guys ride boats or helicopters to and from the rigs.
I don't know if they get paid for that time though.

One job I had in Colombia where they flew me by helicopter to the gas plant and my bodyguard was constantly at my side. I never found out who paid his salary.
