Trump's flag desecration Tweet reflects a Clinton proposal

Trump tweeted a flag burning law that Hillary Clinton proposed in 2005 and the left savaged him, many who supported Hillary Clinton in the election

Was Trump just making a point about leftist media and NeverTrumpers?

The left went nuts about Trump's tweet, but never mentioned the fact that Hillary Clinton had proposed this very thing in 2005. All of the people below supported Hillary Clinton explicitly or at least would have preferred that Hillary be elected over Trump.

David Frum, a NeverTrumper, seemed to support Hilary in the election. But when Trump repeats her proposal, he lashes out . . .

Hillary Clinton proposed a $100,000 fine and a one-year jail term for burning the flag

There is some old footage of Hillary talking about the bill in this liberal blog (Some offensive language)

I posted on this. Call KLBJ in Austin to let them know the flag should not be disrespected. Give ‘em a call.

I believe American symbols should be treated with respect. Service people, the flag, the higher offices. There are so many other ways to express your displeasure. I agree with Trump that it should probably be breaking a law to desecrate our flag. It can be separate from freedom of speech. You could say that you despised the flag and all it stood for. But burning or trampling it could be a law. I grew up believing it was illegal for the flag to touch the ground.

Nix federal involvement in people’s welfare.

Don’t go overboard with the flag while no one honors their oaths of office (which are much more important).

It is still illegal to allow the flag to touch the ground, that is simply one of those laws for which there is “discretionary prosecution”.

As are so many of the laws already on the books. Makes you wonder if “rule of law” even means anything any more.

Same for treating the flag or any of the symbols of US sovereignty with disrespectful intent.

Don't go overboard with the flag

It isn't about the flag. It's about hillary's hypocrisy. The counter-puncher is not amused with hillary supporting the vote recount after promises made. It might also be a not-so-subtle warning to hillary that DJT has the capacity to continually embarrass her unless she just fades away.

That's my take on it, anyway.

Anyone here illegally burning our flag or protesting in the streets, needs to be rounded up and sent home immediately.

That is how I would word it

Anyone with a green card, work permit, visa doing the same stuff, goes home immediately as well

We don’t need outside influence starting fights/wars in our country

I’d drop the flag burners into the mountains of Pakistan. No jail time or fine. Okay, it ain’t going to happen but one can dream.

I think flags ought to be designed so that when set afire they cling to the person burning them.

Can you show me where it is illegal for a flag to touch the ground?

I’ll answer for you. it is not illegal, not is it always a sign of disrespect. Sometimes a flag gets away from you and touches the ground.

Know what you do? Brush or wash the dirt off and raise the flag again.

Maybe not a law, but part of the Standards of Respect.

The Flag Code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used. They are:

* The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.
* The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a speakers desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.
* The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard
* The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.
* The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind.
* The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.

The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.

When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.

Exactly, the Flag Code doesn’t prescribe disposal if it touches the ground.

Here’s some media coverage of the last retirement ceremony I was involved in.

How ironic that people would so disrespect the flag that represents the very freedom of speech they claim gives them the right to desecrate it.
