As a burgeoning dictator in waiting, and given the troops to hand, I will choose the Kalashnikov. Easier to field strip and clean, runs well even if dirty, 7.62 ammo is cheap. Yes in a distance competition it is less accurate, but at 600 yards it’s good enough.

I would think the 7.62x39 is really dropping @600 yards. 5.45 or even (gasp!) 5.56 AK would be my choice at that range.

Bullet drop for the 7.62 x 39 at 600 yards is +42 inches below the point of aim. 5.56 NATO is somewhere in the 19 inch range.
