I wish I still had my Nylon 66 that I bought in 1967. Best .22 I ever owned. Thousands of rounds and never a jam or misfire.

Good call — the ad is indeed from 1966. It appeared in Boy’s Life magazine.

1966 would have been my guess too based on the styles and the poses. That was sort of the last year of the mid-century apogee as things were on the edge of breaking loose in 1967.

Wow. I had a Winchester 22 like the one in the picture when I was in junior high school. Later in senior high we actually had firearms safety and marksmanship classes twice a week. I think I had the 5# one mentioned.

A guy at work found a near mint condition nylon 66 at a pawnshop recently. He was really excited about it. Apparently they are pretty collectible.

I was 16 at the time and remember 1966 well. And you're right the very next year was the ushering in of the era we live in now.

“Thought that would get a reaction.”.........

I would love to see the current firearm manufacturers use those ads again. Would blow the liberals minds, what little they have.

Squirrel stew and squirrel chili. Never made a pie out of squirrel, though I assume it’s something like a Cornish pastry or Shepherd’s Pie.

Got my first .22 rifle when I was SEVEN years old. I can remember that Christmas to this day and that was almost 72 years ago. My brother (now deceased) and I both got a Remington, .22 single shot, a rifle which I use to this day.

My mother and dad both hunted. Being small in stature, mom had a Winchester 25-20 lever action and my dad had a 30-40 Winchester lever action. Wish I still had those guns today.

Looks like bobby223 knew better, see post #40.

I remember those days well, but you have to understand that even though they were 24.95, we were lucky to make $40 a week. No Swedish Mausers, no 98Ks? The Swedish models were there but they brought $34.95. I don’t ever recall seeing 98Ks back in those days, nor do I recall the Mosin at $9. I use to find them in the Dept stores in barrels (Garbage cans), no one seemed to care what condition they were in. I finally bought one, a Carcano 6.5 for $19.95 at what was a E.J.Korvett store. I had the rifle about 3 months and then got a free M-1 to use for 2 years. I gave the Carcano away to a friend before I was given the M-1. The main point I’m trying to bring up is the price of one in today’s economy, is about the same as it was back in the late 50’s with inflation factor tied in. $10 then = $120 today.

Where is the ad for the Sturm and Ruger .22 cal pistol that began to appear in Field & Stream and Sports Afield a little while after the war? I wistfully dreamed of one because it was so German-looking Luger-like, and my grandpa’s name was Sturm, but I knew that Dad would not ever get one or want me to have one. We’re talking now of the mindset of the 1940s in New York State, where the Sullivan law prevailed and nobody but the cops were likely to own—let alone carry—one.

I also got a Remington single shot for Christmas. I was 9 at the time.

Mine was a model 514 which is generally regarded as a nice gun but mine was a bit of a lemon. It was not really accurate and began to sometimes fail to extract after a year or so.

My older Brother had a Remington model 513 scoremaster which was a great rifle in every way. Extremely accurate, totally reliable etc. Many years later I bought a model 511 which as near as I could tell was identical to that model 513 and it too was a fine .22.

Geez, $125 for a Colt Python. That was a chunk of change back then, no doubt. Even with inflation, what an investment a few of those would have been.

I still have a Remington .22 pump that I bought in 1963.

It is the most accurate rifle I have ever shot, and it is still in excellent condition.
