Voting in Yuma Arizona November 8th, 2016

I voted early today.  Usually a vote a couple of hours later, but a little after 7:00, I was in line, waiting to vote.

I thought the number of people voting might be sparse, so I asked Esther, an election worker for 13 years, how the turnout was.

She said: "This is amazing. Usually at this time, it is me and the birds in the parking lot!"

She said the voting had been steady, at much higher levels than she was used to. 

I did a little totally unscientific exit polling. I asked the couple behind me in the picture if they had voted for Hillary or Trump.  They emphatically said "Trump!"

It is not surprising.  Arizona is a Conservative state, and Yuma is a conservative part of Arizona. 

People say this is the most important election ever.  I think the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980, and Dubya Bush in 2000, were equally significant.  Without Reagan we would not have won the Cold War, and the push for English style gun control would not have been stymied.  Without President Bush, Al Gore would have destroyed the economy with insane EPA regulations, and the irrational "Assault Weapons" ban would have been enhanced and renewed.

A president Trump offers a welcome rollback of government power, and a chance to build a Supreme Court majority that actually respects the Constitution, and especially the Second Amendment.

A president Hillary will take us to depths of corruption never seen before.  Her inept foreign policy will further weaken our sovereignty and confuse our allies.  Her Supreme Court picks will gut the Bill of Rights, particularly the Second Amendment, and First Amendment protections for speech, press, and religious freedom.

Much rides on the outcome.

No matter who wins, the old establishment media has been shown to be completely partisan.  That will change much.  If you have not voted, do so. You can find the nearest polling place on the Internet.  I did.

High turnout reported in Yuma, Arizona for the November 8th general election.

Phoenix area. 120 people lined up before six AM. 30 minute wait and line was the same length when I left. Majority Trump people judging by the seniors joking about it and making fun of Hillary. They had no fear and were supremely confident. Great examples for the crowd.

I lived in Yuma for many, many years. Hot as hell there. And the state Republicans always gave them rotten congressional representation through crazy redistricting that diluted the military vote. Mo Udall, Ed Pastor, Raul Grijalva...yechh.

Sierra Vista polling place where I voted was very crowded; I got there at 6:15 and was done voting by 8:00.

We had a mix of ages, races, ethnicities, occupations, and ages represented, as far as I could tell. The machines appeared to be working just fine; I just wish they had managed to bring in more than 7 of them!

FOX had Arizona on the map as a toss up state for days and days. But then they also had Texas as pink. That’s what happens when the news is owned by the Saudis.

High turnout in my precinct in Florida. Many waiting outside the polling station at 6:00 A.M. when workers arrived to set up.
Steady flow and estimate 15-20% over normal turnout.

I, too, lived in Yuma for many, many years. I left when Buckwheat got “elected”. Hot it is, but I love the Yuma area.

I cannot knock Mo Udall. When my Honduran wife was trying ti immigrate LEGALLY into the US in the late 1980s, the INS was giving us a real bad time because she was from Central America. I did everything proper, paid all the fees, submitted all necessary paperwork, but they “lost” everything THREE TIMES. Out of desperation I contacted Mo Udall’s office. I was greatly surprised when he called me at my home personally and offered to come to Yuma and meet me in person. We made an appointment to meet, and he actually went out of his way to come talk with ONE constituent face to face.

Representative Udall told me the actions of the INS were just standard procedure to discourage immigration from certain “undesirable” places. He asked to see all my paperwork, then asked if I would mind if he filed them again IN HIS NAME. Of course I agreed to do that. Less than two weeks later I got a very terse call from the INS office in San Luis, Arizona, demanding I come there ASAP. It’s only about a twenty minute drive, so I went immediately, and when I walked into the office and identified myself, there was a man standing with my files open in his hand. No one said hello, good morning, kiss my butt or anything, only “WHY did you have Representative Udall file these papers?” At that point I knew I had nothing else to lose, so I said “I’ve filed them three times, and three times you LOST THEM. I just wanted someone with some clout to get your attention!”

The INS officer stood looking at me for about twenty seconds, said nothing, turned to his desk, picked up a rubber stamp, stamped the file, and it was done. For that reason I cannot knock Mo Udall.

I drove through YUMA on my way to San Diego once. I thought for sure the city would be full of Hispanics or American Indians.

Even though it is literally out in the middle of nowhere, I really enjoyed the terrain.

Yes, on the Congressional races, Yuma always takes a hit for the team. But we have done well with local races, and have had solid conservative reps at the state level for six years now.

I tried to get it done at 0600 this morning before work, but the line was out the door at the Catholic church on 40th St in the Foothills. I work on the Barry Goldwater Range and had to put fuel in the company truck in Wellton. Driving by the Baptist church on 29E we saw there was no line so we voted there. Took less than 5 min. It beats spending 3 hours in line this evening after work if you don’t mind the 30 mile drive.

From what I understand, and I really hate identity politics, is Hispanics in AR are likely for Clinton. My sister in law lived in a hispanic neighborhood of Scottsdale, and they basically have their own culture there, and more or less ignore the “white people” around them.

They are the required distance from the polling place in the parking lot, right along with the yard signs. It is illegal within the polling place.
