Internet Outage Survival
Self

Posted on 10/21/2016 3:34:58 PM PDT by VA is for Freepers

Many of you help out with tips about self defense and survival. I don't know much about that but I can provide tips on Internet issues.

Key Points:

- All Internet routing is based on IP Addresses - Domain Name Service (DNS) translates a host (www) and domain (freerepublic.com) into an IP address (209.157.64.201) - If you know the IP address you can often go directly to page by pasting IP into URL bar then Enter - Most large companies have geographically dispersed servers with multiple IP addresses to get to their site

So... how do you find an IP address? This command:

nslookup www.____________.com

fill in ______________ with domain. Keep in mind this is not restricted to www so if you have mail.__________.com it will work too

Windows - Start then "cmd" Enter

MAC - Open Terminal Application

- In Command window type "nslookup" then Enter - At new prompt type anything you would type into URL bar (one at a time) - Copy IP Address(es) - Repeat - "exit"

This will not work if there is a DNS outage so you may want to do this now for search engines, social media, bank, etc.

Advanced information: If you are in Internet outage and did not do this beforehand you can attempt to use other DNS servers.

At the nslookup prompt (>) type "server x.x.x.x" then Enter another DNS server IP. common ones are:

8.8.8.8 4.2.2.2 4.2.2.1

from there use same nslookup commands as above.

If one of these works you could temporarily overwrite you local DNS server and use it in your computer's network properties.

Good Luck

Sorry... did not post as clean as I hoped. I am not as good at HTML as IP addressing.

You can load your router or your computer with a list of DNS Servers

That solves dns attack issues, unless they attack all of them

Can you distill this info specifically to free republic? If SHTF, this site is where we need access to the most.

If we had an American government, these attacks would be history.

Who cares about facebook.

However orders for one of my businesses come in over the Internet.

As I offer a twenty four hour turn around on orders having the Internet down for say 12 hours is a problem.

Longer then that can seriously inconvenience my customers.

A customer that is inconvenienced is one who will not be buying from me again.

I am not part of FreeRepublic so they may have other methods, but publicly they are showing:

209.157.64.200

209.157.64.201

Go ahead and copy paste one of these into the URL bar in browser and hit Enter. See you back here!

Helpful post.

Does anyone know if there are contingency plans for long term Internet outages that will allow some degree of FR availability, news update and messaging capability?

Shortwave HF / VHF mail / message board / http://www.winlink.org/ ?

I did some searching and can’t find much on this topic.

Would be good to stay in touch and update fellow FReepers of UN MRAP convoy sightings and FEMA camp Red list roundups ;n)

Seriously, what shortwave stations - frequencies would be good to monitor?

You can always use FR’s IP address to access the site if DNS is down.

The IP address is: 209.157.64.200

Simply paste this in your browsers address bar and away you go.

ping freerepublic.com
Pinging freerepublic.com [209.157.64.200] with 32 bytes of data:
