PHILADELPHIA (CNN) — Donald Trump on Thursday offered up his most detailed prescriptions yet to address the student debt crisis, proposing an income-based cap on student loan payments and an ambitious student loan forgiveness program.

Trump, in a meandering speech to a group of rowdy high school and college students, called for a single student loan repayment plan capped at 12.5% of a borrowers’ income and suggested borrowers would see their student debt forgiven after 15 years of making full payments.

“We’re going to work it out. It’ll be a negotiation,” Trump said, prompting one student to shout out “Art of the Deal!”

“We’re going to work it out big league,” Trump added....

I paid off my loans a long time ago. Can I apply for forgiveness and get a refund?

This is not American Donald Trump. It is liberal wealth redistribution.

"Should basket weaving majors be subsidized?"

We will need lots of big baskets for all the deplorables. These public servants are to be elevated in a new caste system based upon each individual's level of irredeemabilitiness.

I honestly don't think it's a tactic. I think, on this issue, the status-quo will remain.

The Dems and even most Repulicans will never address the root cause of the student loan bomb - government subsidizing the Hell out of it. That's why tuition rates are skyrocketing, liberal college professors are making six figures bashing America, books are costing $1,000 every year, and we got African studies or Transgender studies instead of the basics.

The solution is to simply end all federal government involvement in education. The funding, the regulations. From Head Start to people getting their Ph Ds. End it all.

Relax, he is going after the millennial vote that hates Hillary for cheating Bernie. Nothing like this can pass without Congress and by then it will be much different.

This is a tough issue. I say stop government backed loans and figure out a life plan to 50 to pay it back.

look at the charts on the link I provided above. Notice where the tuition cost curve starts to really shoot up - about 2001. Guess when all the PC crapola really kicked into high gear, and when all the delicate little snowflakes who’d been given “Participant” ribbons through all 12 years of school prior to that hit college?

As far as I know, this is the first time he’s expressed details about managing student loans, and how he proposes to deal with the cost of higher education and governmant-backed loan guarantees, going forward. He’s aiming to take a bite out of Crooked’s share of the millenial vote.

You’re losing me, Donald.

Hillary Clinton is the alternative; three to five Supreme Court nominees.

It’s a PROPOSAL. When you negotiate you always start with an extreme position. Let him go after the millennials.

-- Trump won't use it as a gimme-free-stuff thing, and he'll stick it to the lenders hard while not bankrupting them. --

The only group really taking it in the shorts will be the college adminstration "fat." And there is plenty of that.

That is exactly what my husband and I are doing... paying for them so they won’t be burdened with loans that prevent them from buying a house, etc.

It’s not easy but those of us who borrowed for our education know how difficult it is.

Let us see. If one goes to one of the Military Academies they have to sign up for five years of active duty.

After 5 years (and they get paid the same as if they paid for their own college) the obligation is paid off.

If I had to buy a new car to be able to work for a Uber type company, will the Govt subsidize my car payments?

No, they would rather 'pay' me unemployment or welfare - then allow me SSD saying I was 'stressed out' over the embarrassment of drawing unemployment or welfare for all those years....

I do NOT want the govt to buy me a car or truck, just being absurd for the sake of absurdity.

Mr. Trump never claimed to be a fiscal conservative on spending or debt. Anything to keep HRC out I guess.
