The NFL clearly knows this. Given that the NFL is HUGELY popular in just about all parts of the USA, one wrong move by the NFL and they could lose the "golden egg"--especially if fans start to put pressure on the NFL's official advertisers.

Mmmm I dunno. We do know that the left has been attacking football from within, as it is a uniquely American, and macho sport. However it is so ingrained into American culture and tradition that I can see it taking a hit but still surviving.

So it would be a win-win for the left. If they remove the anthem and the NFL goes under, they win. If they remove the anthem and the majority of fans, however slim, accepts it (grudgingly or otherwise), they still win.

It’s all about ratings. The NFL is so popular because it has a huge number of casual fans. I doubt these casual fans really care about this garbage, at least enough to stop watching. If they do, then the NFL will do something. But I bet they also think the controversy is giving them a lot of extra free media exposure that they wouldn’t have had otherwise, so we will see what the ratings do.
