And so on V-J Day we take renewed faith and pride in our way of life. We have had our day of rejoicing over the victory. We have had our day of prayer and devotion. Now let us set aside V-J Day as one of renewed consecration to the principles that have made us the strongest nation on earth and which, in this war, we have striven to preserve.
~ Harry S Truman (1884-1972) (proclaiming V-J Day, 2 September 1945)

Unlike many on this board, I remember it well. We rushed into the streets and cheered and suddenly we knew that our lives wold be different. None of us however, expected this America.

The invasion of Kyushu planned for October 1945 was expected to incur losses in the millions, and this factor figured significantly in the decision to use atomic bombs against Hiroshima and Nagasaki (on August 6 and 9, respectively). I might not be here if that invasion had taken place as my Dad was told that his outfit, 45th Inf.Div. Thunderbirds, would be part of the invasion after transferring from the ETO. Those who try to show that the use of the 'A Bombs' was unwise in deployment or using them at all will find no sympathy from me. The fanatic ISIS warrior had a close cousin in the Bushido Japanese and 'convincing' such a death-lovers takes a big sledge-hammer!

Rhode Island is the only state left that still recognizes VJ Day but as the last few WWII veterans leave us the holiday is getting less support. The hate America crowd would prefer to demonize this country for using the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki but neglect to take into account the barbaric actions of the Japanese that forced these actions in the first place.

My grandfather grew up in rural Missouri. He said that he and his brother were working in a field near the railroad tracks when a locomotive came through. There were several drunk railroads on it banging on the tender with a big hammer to get people’s attention and yelling “the wars over!” This was WWI.

Toshikazu Kaze was Foreign Minister Shigemitsu's aide on the Missouri, and in the films of the surrender can be seen helping Shigemitsu walk and sit, since the Foreign Minister had lost his right leg in 1932. (Ironically, Shigemitsu was one of the few in Japanese government who opposed the war and survived, which is why he was appointed FM in Prince Higashikuni's cabinet after Hirohito's declaration on August 15.)
Kaze reflected on MacArthur's speech in an interview used in the final episode of The Last Days of World War Two, about how gracious MacArthur was, and wondering if the roles had been reversed, how gracious the Japanese would have been.

If I was a full-term baby, I was a part of the VJ Day celebrations. I was born 9 months later.

Oh, that has to do with Oprah? I thought that it was a cartoon of Bush 41 puking on the Japanese Prime Minister. THAT was funny (well, if you weren’t the PM, that is)!

I grateful and heartfelt THANK YOU! to all surviving WW2 vets and their families. You ALL allowed our nation to survive and prosper, against 2 of the 3 greatest evils of the 20th Century. While many today don’t know of your deeds and sacrifices, they certainly have not been forgotten, nor will those of us aware of what you did allow it to be forgotten.
I can’t thank any of my relatives who took part, they’re all gone now. All that remains of them is their then-young children, who are now in their late 70s and early 80s. But thanks, again, to all that are still here. I salute you!

The hate America crowd would prefer to demonize this country That crowd was around in the late '50s. One bunch went around the world, asking people if America was correct to use atom bombs on Japan.
When those who suffered Japanese occupation were asked, they responded, "Why did you drop only two?"
