Which cartridge do you use for long range hunting?

With the latest guns, scopes, and laser rangefinders, well-practiced hunters are able to confidently take game at over 1,000 yards.

If you are looking to break into the long range hunting arena, or are trying to improve your long range accuracy, listen to what the experts at Red Rock Precision Rifles feel are the best cartridges for long range hunting.

Shooters sensitive to recoil should choose a 28 Nosler and those looking for more power should choose a .300 Remington Ultra Mag. However, that’s just one man’s opinion.

If it's deer or deer-sized game you’re chasing, you can’t go wrong with the 6.5 Creedmoor, though tons of long range game animals have fallen to the good old .300 Winchester Magnum, and the new Weatherby 6.5-3000 is quickly making a name for itself. See the video here. What are you all using?

I will remind all readers that such “open end” gun and ammo questions can be used to target your weapons and your habits.

But the BATF would never participate in baiting operations, would it?

Back in my “hunting days” I used either a M-109A1 with a 155mm shell (HE or WP) or a 152mm gun (HEAT)/launcher and a Shillelagh missile on my M-60-A2.

Sorry... you lost me right there. I'm a 200-yard hunter at most, and the vast majority of my shots are under 100 yards.

A man's got to know his limitations.

A buddy used to shoot deer and antelope with a 300 Weatherby, and he had a pretty good success rate north of 500 yards. Spent a lot of time sighting-in the gun and understanding how to use it at that range. Bring a strong shoulder.

A 1000-yard shot on a game animal seems highly unethical regardless of accuracy claims.

I don't know any non pros who can kill at 1,000 yards, even with a .338 chambered in lapua.
The go to cartridge to reliably knock down medium size game like deer as well as larger game is the 30.06

Long range hunting is unnecessary and inhumane. Like some dentist posing with a tame lion he illegally shot.

“A 1000-yard shot on a game animal seems highly unethical regardless of accuracy claims.”

Which instinctively raises the question, at what distance do you find the line that divides between ethical and unethical?

AND, the even more important question: WHO DECIDES?

Hmmmmmmmmm????????????

Who even thinks about taking game at 500 yards, let alone 1000. Seems very irresponsible. Most hunters go for a clean kill.

I have a Remington 700 left hand 270. Almost all my deer have been killed by it and I have no desire for any other gun.

Out here in West TX shots are going to average 100 to 200 yards with some in the 400 yard range depending on brush. I shoot a 300 and a 257 Weatherby with my go to being the 257. 1000 yard shot’s are stunting not hunting, develop some hunting skills and move in closer.

Do you always make sure the meat you buy at the store is strangled? Personally, go for a quick clean kill.

My rifle is set up for 260yard shots. I use a .308 and assume an 8” drop for my point blank range. After that it’s Kentucky windage.
