Battleground strategy is one thing, troop internal cohesiveness and loyalty going into battle is an entirely different matter. Admittedly, the saying, if taken out of context, can be misinterpreted.
It’s a good thing Nelson didn’t have rogue captains shooting at their fellow Brits. That’s what Trump has.
And speaking of sea commanders, John Paul Jones DID successfully lead a divided crew. He never had much in the way of a dutiful crew. They were mutinous scalawags for the most part.
I read one of those special gems — a book written by an honest military historian who had access to google.
John Paul Jones lost many opportunities due to mutinous opposition. In fact, he even had a problem at the dockyard. The man in charge of building his vessel was cantankerous and corrupt.
We will never know John Paul Jones’ full potential.
