I do not care about the feelings, desires or wishes of the mythical “moderate” muslim....they all spring from the same poisoned well.
FWIW, this article is about the school board in Baltimore COUNTY. This is an entirely separate political jurisdiction from Baltimore CITY (which is what is meant when one says “Baltimore”), which is where the aquarium and Inner Harbor are.
Schools close on religious holidays if a large enough percentage of their students celebrate those holidays, because otherwise the absenteeism is too high and it interferes with the educational mission. This is the reason why American schools are closed on Sundays and on Christmas and Good Friday; because a large enough percentage of their students observe their religion on those days.
If there were a large enough share of Muslims in the population (I believe the threshold is 5% of the total student body, at least in my school district), then the schools would close on their holidays — as they should, IMO.
No, the problem is not whether to open or close on Muslim holidays. The problem is that we have enough Muslims in our schools to make it an issue.

You would be wrong about that. We’ve all had Jewish days off for ages...and Baltimore Co. has a heavy Jewish pop. I’d say more than Moslems are now.
Thus the real reason for having days off - not to “recognize” or “honor”, but because too many people would not show up. It’s a practical thing.

The article never mentioned Jewish holidays being off and that is what I was using as reference.
If Baltimore schools close on Jewish holidays I would assume they would have to close on Muslim holidays——or lawsuits etc.
