The quake hit at 03:36 (01:36 GMT), 76 km (47 miles) southeast of the city, at the very shallow depth of 10km (six miles), the USGS said,
In Rome, some buildings shook for 20 seconds, according to La Repubblica newspaper.
So far, there are no reports of damage or casualties.
The prime minister's office said the government was in touch with regional heads of the civil protection agency.
The quake was initially reported as being magnitude 6.4.
Looks like a 4.6 aftershock.
It happened at 3:30 in the morning. That’s gotta be scary to wake up by a earthquake.
It might update soon?
I saw on my phone app it was only 2km deep. This could be bad, as you said.
A wake up call to Rome.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are a mix of vulnerable and earthquake resistant construction. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick with mud and mid-rise nonductile concrete frame with infill construction.
Yep, was thinking that myself.

#BREAKING: Town of #Amatrice, #Italy reported as destroyed following earthquake. Mayor “Town doesn’t exist anymore.”
Just had another aftershock after the 4.6, a 5.5.
A 6.2, followed by a 5.5 about an hour later.
Sounds pretty bad.
Prayers for those in the area.
Expected it to be bad, but not wipe out an entire town.
Yes, they’re going to need them.
