I don’t think chemicals are necessary. We know how to create dirt that allows crops to grow. We just need to be willing to do it and respect natural law while doing so.

Nobody has mentioned the amount of chemicals needed to sustain such farming methods. In a controlled environment, where you can exclude bugs and weed seeds, you don't need pesticides and weed killer.
I could see this being very popular in places up in Alaska, allowing more growing of fresh, local produce. I could see remote installations like oil drilling areas being interested.
