Deer Hunting is endangered by Coyotes

Coyotes will hurt our Deer Hunting

With the rise of coyote population, Quality Deer Managment Association data shows that 75 percent of the coyote population needs to be removed annually to control their population. But the reality is that hunting coyotes isn’t going to make a dent in decreasing their population due too many coyotes out there. Some hunters and land owners have talked of trapping, localized areas have had some successes. Trapping is still hard due to resource, man power and gasoline. Someone has to get out there and check the traps in the areas. Despite the efforts our deer and turkey population are still endangered. Read the rest of the story here.

The elimination of wolves a couple of centuries ago is what left room for the coyotes to expand their range so drastically-nature abhors a vacuum, so the coyotes filled the predator gap left by the wolves-and coyotes are more clever, resourceful and adaptable to just about any environment-people certainly are responsible, but it isn’t just the greenies-

Wolves don’t like towns and cities much, either-not so coyotes-for them burbs with dumpsters and outdoor pets are just restaurants that have takeout-bears are like that, too-if we want to live in the animals’ back yard, we need to keep our trash and pets out of reach of their noses-they are opportunists...

I live on Cape Cod. There is a deer hunting season, but it is crowded, so there are many places where it would be unsafe to hunt. There are way too many deer... that’s why we have such a Lyme disease problem.

The coyote dog mix that I saw was a bit larger than most coyotes, also had a brownish tinge to his coat instead of the normal gray.

Also heavier set but his head looked pretty much straight coyote.

Hmm, they got coyotes out by my folks’ place in AZ and there are no pheasants, but there are plenty of quail. Maybe the coyotes can’t catch them, with their jumping skills?

Yes in the suburbs of Chicago there are so many deer that they’ve eaten all the gardens and shrubs and in the winters they starve. Just recently were getting coyotes...saw a big one...60 pounds and looked really healthy.

Burn your trash, have a big enough pack of large dogs (I recommend 5 to 8) to discourage the yotes, make sure livestock fences are high enough and buried at least 18 inches below grade (concrete is best).
When all else fails. WILDLIFE LISTENS, WHEN GUNPOWDER SPEAKS.

Out in Arizona there is an open season on yotes, same in Nevada.
You just need a current hunting license.
California is a bit different, but I make sure I renew my depredation permit every year.

Get a Depredation Permit; any USFS or BLM office, still need a Valid Hunting License.

Haha! I don’t keep livestock and since I only eat fresh food, there is little trash to smell-what little fruit and veggie peeling and such I carry outside the fence to the back edge of the property near the woods for deer-any pet food cans, packages go into the locking trash can outside the gate at the road-we do have trash service out here-and it is dirt cheap-but if you don’t want to pay, you burn it.

Most people who keep livestock bring their dogs-all really big dogs-in at night-too tempting to mountain lions, wild hogs, coyote packs-if they keep llamas and/or donkeys for guard animals, they have no problems-those damned things are mean-there was a man kicked and trampled to death by a donkey here last year, and llamas are evil tempered, too...

All the same, I do keep a loaded 12 gauge close at hand...

Don’t need one to shoot coyotes around here that
I know of. Sheep farmers kill them at will. However,
rice farmers tend to be more tolerant of coyotes for
the reasons I outlined in my first post.

I saw a lot of skunk there -- in the Des Plaines area. At night they would dart out of the bushes, freaking me out.

Outdoors/Rural/wildlife/hunting/hiking/backpacking/National Parks/animals list please FR mail me to be on or off . And ping me is you see articles of interest.

Certainly a problem, but for deer much less of an issue than the growing population of wolves and hybrids. Wait until they get to urban areas
