The United States women's national team took a big step towards getting into the gold medal match at Rio 2016 on Saturday. Not only was their 1-0 win over France — the No. 3 team in the world — a big statement to the rest of the field's contenders, but it should get them a top seed for the knockout stage as well.

In the first half, the Americans had trouble getting a hold of the game, with France looking like the more likely team to score. Hope Solo came up huge repeatedly, making three big saves. She tipped a header from Wendie Renard onto the crossbar in the 15th minute and made two other difficult close-range stops on Marie-Laure Delie.

World Cup and Olympic final hero Carli Lloyd broke the deadlock between the two teams in the 64th minute, scoring her second goal of the tournament.

I’m too busy what with MLB, NHL, NFL and NBA to sit for 90 minutes watching people frustrate each other on a soccer field.

To each his own.

Renard is a game changer for France. I suppose turnabout is fair play after so many years of the U.S. having Abby Wambach as a target in the box. But we live in the Brave New World: maybe we could find a bearded, 6'4," 200 pound trans woman to match up with her. (Just kidding.)

Jill Ellis is gambling on defense with the outside backs pushing up. France was good enough to beat the pressure and exploit the gaps. The U.S. was lucky (well, the U.S. has Hope Solo) to escape in the first half. If we meet France again, I wonder if Ellis will change the scheme.

Johnson and Pugh were both missed. I suppose they might be rested again against Colombia, but I hope they're fully recovered by the knockout rounds. France was missing a great player as well. The Olympic format is much too constrained for soccer. In a crap-shooting kind of way, that's probably an advantage for the U.S., given the great depth the U.S. enjoys, but minor injuries are a real wild card with the lack of recovery time.

Great talent, endurance, finesse, are needed to play soccer. Most of our high schools have soccer teams and I greatly enjoy watching a good game. I’ve seen 1-0 games in baseball and hockey and 0-0 football games. I don’t consider the amount of scoring as the ultimate in a sport, but the beauty of a well played game is more important.
Unfortunately, show-off-manship has largely replaced sportsmanship and killed any interest in certain sports for me.

There’s no other way to say it. Soccer sucks. It’s only paid attention to because of the nationalism angle.

NFL football is exciting....crashing brutes defending and offending with military precision using coordinated attacks and repelling of attacks via strategies that would make Patton and Rommel proud, is exciting!!

Even baseball is more exciting.
