Actually, asking that it be taken down can be treated as coordination (control is not required), and it has been used in the past as evidence of illegal activity. Cruz could not legally do that, nor could he afford to (1) go off message to deal with an outside ad, or (2) go off message to deal with charges of illegal coordination with a PAC.

Funny, but Newt certainly thought a candidate could do that 4 years ago. I can find nothing that the FEC admonished him/fined him for this.
Nor can I find that the law has changed.
So right now, I’ll take Newt’s view on this.
