Be careful of odd emails. Dont't open them....they can actually transmit
malware to you, then wrap around all your saved email addies and send
it to them, too.

Another vote for Malwarebytes. Super tool. And it’s free. Although there is a pay for version.

IT rule of thumb: if you didn’t install it, get rid of it. It’s bloatware that’ll bog down your PC. McAfee misses a lot of that - run Malwarebytes.

Don’t click on links in supposedly funny emails your pals send you. That is jerkball stuff responsible for probably 85% of malware infections and considerate people should not do it.

If you have "in private" (or equivalent) browsing enabled, it doesn't save on your system. If I'm suspicious but curious about content I go there. I've had that ransomware warning there, and simply shut down and when I restarted it was gone.

If there's a FReeper expert who knows different, and I was just lucky, I'm always ready to listen.

Not a very good program.

For cleaning your system get CCleaner. It is free.
Use Malwarebytes to look for malware, etc. Another useful tool is Herd Protect. (Cloud based multi engine AV/Malware scanner)

For the ultimate fix upgrade to an Mint Linux system. You can download it and run it from a burned DVD to poke around in it and to see if you are comfy with it. (Linux does not get malware) (Mint is very Windows like)

I use a combo of Malwarebytes free edition and CCleaner every other day or so with good results in PC performance and protection from malware of all kinds.

From the Wiki article you cited. “””Once PCKeeper is started, it will do a fake scan on your computer that will state that there are numerous infections or problems present. It will then prompt you to remove these so-called infections or problems, but will not allow you to do so unless you first purchase the program. Please understand, that PCKeeper is scripted to show you these fake scan results regardless of the computer you are on and how clean it is. Therefore, do not be concerned by any of the scan results as they are only being shown to scare you into thinking that you have a serious problem””””

Identical to what I experienced. Just a Slovakian scam!!!!

Here is a tiny program that cleans a section that every thing else seems to miss, the Most Recently Used lists.

https://www.brightfort.com/mrublaster.html

I use Mru-Blaster and CCleaner every night before I shut the computer down. It takes two minutes. I haven’t had a virus in four or five years. Once a month I’ll run Malwarebytes just to check everything out.

CCleaner is great for seeing if something snuck in. Click Tools and it will list all your Programs. Anything that doesn’t belong, delete it.

Never open emails from strangers! That is the primary way you’ll infect your computer.

CCleaner is also valuable and should be obtained.
