Donald Trump Is No Ronald Reagan
Wall Street Journal ^ | 6/28/2016 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 06/28/2016 1:00:02 PM PDT by poconopundit

Peggy Noonan, ex-speech writer for Ronald Reagan, argues that you can't equate Donald Trump with Ronald Reagan.  Here are a few excerpts from the column followed by my commentary:

  • Look, Mr. Trump is not Ronald Reagan.  Reagan served two full terms as the governor of a state so vast that if it were a country it would have been one of the important economies in the world.  He was a union president who served seven terms during the most fraught time in Hollywood’s history and emerged respected by all sides.  He was no novice.

  • Trump supporters should be able to make an affirmative case for their candidate without diminishing Reagan or anyone else.  You shouldn’t cut down a man you know was great to make him fit your candidate’s size.  It is poor political etiquette.  It’s also historical parallelism gone mad.  Mr.  Trump isn’t Reagan, and he isn’t Andrew Jackson either.  He’s Mr.  Trump.

  • Donald Trump needs serious, substantive people to help with his campaign and advise him in foreign and domestic policy.  But some will not join him because they don’t want to get Trump cooties.  They don’t want the stigma of working with him.

  • Maybe if Trump wants to be compared to Reagan he should act more like him.

Single handedly? Thatcher was involved, a lot. And I’m no Catholic, but Pope John Paul II did more to end communism than either of the other two. And all three arrived at the moment the USSR was imploding economically.

I didn't say that... I used the word almost...Still doesn't change my point

I believe the globalists and cheap labor express is today's equivalent of the Soviet Union, maybe not in terms of violence, but certainly in the destruction of the kind of life free and independent people hold dear. maybe we should equate the globalist challenge to freeing the slaves.

Totally agree...

I'm very interested in what Trump will actually do, not just talk about it...

From Noonan's original WSJ article: The man you back has never held office and has not proved himself as a leader of men. You have to include that in your arguments.

Where was this version of Peggy when another version was saying glowing things about BHO?

I wish she would just come out and say whom she supports, rather than giving these sideways stabs to people who are willing to say whom they support and why.

Worse, Clinton HAS held office, and has nothing to show for it but a polished resume.

We don’t need Reagan this time around. We need Trump.

He is not Ronald Reagan who was a unique individual who brought down the Iron Curtain. Trump is Trump a man for the times we live. He will bring down the NWO.

Reagan signed Roe v. Wade for California 7 years before Roe v Wade. Reagan signed the largest amnesty for illegal aliens in history, and did nothing to secure the border. Reagan turned tail and ran from Lebanon after 241 of our brave Marines were slaughtered -- leaving Hizbollah laughing at America when he could have killed the Islamic Jihad baby in its crib.

He is not St. Ronalus, Peggy. Just shut up already.

I cannot believe people don’t understand that business men are leaders! They have to be in order to make it work. I would much rather have someone with a lot of business leadership or military leadership than just political experience!

We use to elect people who had accomplished something either in business, military or both. That was a requirement of most voters. In recent years we have been electing people who have done nothing but be a politician. How has that been working for us?

The world does not need Reagan now. We had him when we needed him most.

It is a new time. We have a new guy.

I’m sorry but I see nothing in your view that merits a ‘point’.

RR was widely viewed in 1980 as a reckless cowboy who would assuredly start WWIII with the Soviets. The media and the left hated RR as much as they hate DT today. The similarities far outweigh the differences.

In 1980, RR had achieved nothing that we now look back on with 2016 hindsight. So your view is colored in the past but you would never have been able to predict RR’s great success, and if you had advocated for RR in 1980, you would would have suffered tremendous ridicule as a result.

So there is no ‘point’ to your view. It cannot exist. It is not real.

Yes, I agree being Governor for two terms of one of the largest economies in the world, California, is achieving nothing...

What in the heck was I thinking...?

Thanks for setting me straight...my point in fact not real or even exists..

Rolling eyes...almost out of my head...

You might want to check your knees, knee jerk reactions can be painful..

I think Pop is still,

Still what ?

A poster said Trump could be greater than Reagan, my point was how about Trump actually do something worth comparing him to Reagan first...

I certainly hope Trump leaves a legacy as important as Reagan's or better...

We certainly need him too...

Now you’re being a sassy smart mouth with me. I shook Ronald Reagan’s hand at Bel Air Presbyterian in 1990. I followed him throughout the 70s when I was in California and in the 80s while he was President.

RR as governor was nothing big. He was good but hated by the left. When he ran for President in 1976, he was thought to be a joke, a B-Rated actor wanting to be President.

In 1980 he was viewed similarly as a bad joke. He was not elected because he had been governor. He was not elected because he was eloquent in his speech and manner.

He was elected because he was viewed as a hard-line badass that was needed to shake up Washington and put that pussy Carter out to his peanut pasture. The awful economy and policies of Carter coupled with the Iranian Hostage Crisis caused democrats shame to show up to the polls thereby allowing that Hitler-like Reagan fellow in their view to be elected.

That’s how it happened. People like you more than 35 years later are farting out your ears with BS ‘points’.

Now get lost!
