Through adversity I had come to know myself; I completed the journey within. Three strikes, I’m out? No, three strikes — I’m in!

It was four a.m. on a moonless, muggy night … just the way I wanted it. With 240 pounds of bulging blubber and mushy muscles sagging on a five-foot, eleven-inch frame, I wanted no one to see me trying to jog.

At the high school track’s starting line, I punched my stopwatch and groaned into a trot, trying to banish thoughts of rapidly overpowering fatigue by reflecting on the three simultaneous events that led to my being here at such an early hour.

One … two … three cruel strikes — and I was out! Strike one: In the home we built, my blue-eyed, beautiful, brunette bombshell bride left a goodbye note, and little else. Strike two: A freakish lawn mower accident severed my right big toe and rendered the next two useless. Strike three: I had metamorphosed from the outdoor, active type to a sedentary sofa slob.

I’m picking up the slack with other activities, but a 4mi trot every other day is enough for my joints. I had plantar from climbing the hills with my brother chasing blacktails, so I’m dropping some weight and not pushing it on the road. I used to lift a lot but now have shoulder issues. Ready for an overhaul!!

Sixty-one, junk knees, bad right shoulder, back is a mess. Went from 263 to 171 due to diet, decided 171 was to light now 200 going back to 185. Walk 4 miles each day, 2 to the gym and 2 back after lifting 45 minutes to an hour. Today is my fifth day this week for the first time in 20 years. The young guys with the huge muscles have been helping me with the new machines, I think they respect my work ethic or just feel sorry for me. I’m using the machines to work back up to free weights.

Bless the inventors of muscle relaxers and pain pills. I’m not doing it for love but out of anger.

Liberals would probably call Twinkie “fat”. So, later I
tentatively plan to have a late breakfast of eggs, sausage,
biskits & gravy. Eat a good meal now and then instead of all
those bagels. (I had an Eskimo Piesicle while ago.)

I’m old anyway & ain’t looking for a boyfriend. I’ve been a
nursemaid for well over 35 years to Fang; but he IS doing
brunch for me today. Almost 53 years of marriage &
counting! Old, fat, tough, & strong, TWINKIE

Good for you, keep up the outstanding work.

I ruptured my patella tendon in Dec 2012. Operation on 20 Dec, and was rehabbing until fully cleared July of 2013. Still had significant muscle loss in that leg and I ballooned up to 200 lbs from what I consider my absolute fittest weight of 155 when 27 and an old school garbage man slinging cans by hand.

Spring of 2015 I decided to limit portion sizes and stop drinking soda and eating junk food. By September I was 186 lbs and on September 19th I quit drinking alcohol.

January 2016 I joined a gym and started doing a cardio/core/light strength class twice a week and a light weightlifting class another two days a week. When I started, I was 182 pounds with 36% bodyfat. My last weigh in (May) I was 171 pounds with 28% bodyfat. I’m now off of blood pressure medications and my bad leg is now nearly equal in strength to the good one.

My goal is in November start doing actual heavy free weight work along with the two day a week cardio/core class. I would like to be down to 20% bodyfat by New Years.

The only way to avoid the aches and pains of aging is to endure the aches and pains of vigorous exercise.
Getting old is not for wusses.

I started my diet yesterday, so far so good. I am rehabbing my back and knees, doing full body workout 5 days a week. When in 40’s I got a trainer and gradually got rid of the pain. I didn’t hurt for 12 years then it came back big time. When I worked out in my forties I ended up doing twice a day for 5/week. Upper body in the morning and lower at night. I was in the best shape of my life when I quit.

I decided that the pain was too bad and I don’t like being drugged all the time, but also the things to come make it look like it is important to be in the best shape possible.

Congrats on your progress. You measured body fat and I wish I had. I just weighted myself and looked in the mirror. I took my weight off very fast and did not eat enuff protein and so lost muscle mass. I was surprised to see how weak I was but I am coming back faster than I thought possible. I have only been working out for 3 months and have gained some muscle but my endurance is much better. I smoke, I know I’m a dummy, but heart rate is back to 52 to 54 at rest and blood pressure 110/60, low heart rate and bp runs in my family. I had forgotten how much I had missed working out.

I guess we just need to keep going and prepare for what may come. Ever notice the better shape you’re in the better looking the women you spend time with tend to be?

And yet I had so much fun during my coronary bypass surgery I had them do 2 more, and 5 days later (after release from one hospital) an aneurysm repair....

Yea baby I know how to party!
