AK Sportsman ^ | 6/16/2016 | J Hines

There are many different tools and things that you can stow away in your bug out bag. There is no SHTF bag to rule them all. However, knowing that we need to provide for the big three: food, water and shelter. We can focus on the tools to help you survive. So here's a quick down and dirty list, but please add your list to this as well.

See the rest of SHTF Lists here, again what do you all have in your bug out bag?

I only found one list at the link.

How does keeping fish eggs in my bug out bag per #8 facilitate survival?

FISHING GEAR –
Nice to have a rod and reel. But, not necessary, all you need are lures, fish eggs and fishing line.

“How does keeping fish eggs in my bug out bag per #8 facilitate survival?”

In case you need bait and can’t find a worm or grasshopper would be my guess.

I figured that’s why they listed lures immediately before fish eggs.

What kind of carrying back pack does one recommend?

I have had SHTF bags for 30 years.

Three things:
1. Cover the basics as the OP says.
2. Be brutally honest with yourself as the how much shit you can really carry.
3. Adjust for seasonal changes.

I’m getting a Shadowhawk tac flashlight soon. 800 freaking lumens. $56 but very much worth it.

"I figured that’s why they listed lures immediately before fish eggs."

For the lures I would probably fill a bad with those Mepps inline spinner baits. They aren't the best for each kind of fish but they will catch just about anything. They are small, work in just about any clarity of water and are a very good all around bait for most freshwater game fish. Not the best bass bait, but it will catch them and I wouldn't be fishing for bass in this type situation. I've noticed on the History Channel series "Alone", those gill nets are the most effective tool for catching fish to survive on and the most successful contestants definitely focus on fish for food.

Haven’t fished in some time, but remember adding fish eggs to lures, or using them alone. Sometimes fish won’t bite artificial bait.

Fishing gear is definitely a must. We have a lot of it, so no problem there.

Fishing gear for me is wasted space and extra weight. I live in the desert. Instead I carry snare making materials.

You’re right, of course. I live in Massachusetts and there is water everywhere.

I recently bought a 4wd truck for beach fishing. The first accessories I got cover all those first things listed. I have a couple other goodies behind the seats i won’t list, as well.
