It won't matter. Everyone who is on record somewhere as having acquired a gun will be targeted even if he has documented the disposal of that gun. There are perhaps 300 million guns in private hands but the number of gun owners is much smaller and a crackdown, with sufficient planning can hit most of their homes and businesses in one operation. The military does not even have to be involved. Many local police forces will be glad to cooperate and the Federal armies- every agency has armed members- and the TSA will provide sufficient manpower.
