Rand Paul introduces amendment to get rid of draft

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., has introduced an amendment to the Senate's fiscal 2017 defense policy bill that would do away with the draft entirely.

The draft has played a major role in debate of this year's National Defense Authorization Act, the first considered by Congress since the ban on women serving in combat was lifted late last year.

The House Armed Services Committee voted to add all women ages 18-26 to the Selective Service, but the provision was later stripped out in the full House. The House version of the bill still includes a requirement from Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, that would require the Defense Department to look at whether a draft is even still needed.

The bill that passed the Senate Armed Services Committee would still draft women. It's unclear how any differences will be reconciled if they remain when the two chambers head into conference....

Indeed, but they have been registering males for decades. What a boondoggle. It needs to go.

The Constitution empowers the President to call up the militia, and Congress to organize and equip the militia.
Bad a job as they may do, let’s not officially gut those powers entirely.

Why does it seem like Ron and Rand are on another planet?

Russia, China, Israel, most of Europe and the DPRK all have a draft.

Great. What does that have to do with the price of rice in China and any of the many compelling issues facing America? I used to like Rand but he’s a bit out to lunch IMO.

There is a registration of males still I think. Considering sharia, we need that.

Either it goes or register the women. If they get called up they can do clerical and logistics stuff.

Nope. They are now eligible for all combat slots, just like men. It isn’t 1940 anymore.

I know.

Bt i think it makes sense that everyone in terms of equality be registered.

Not everyone has to be infanty though. Funnel any gal called up from SS to do suport/logistics, so they can serve but not be active combat.

One case where a lot of Conservatives are in favor of a national registration database.

Funny that.

End any talk about Drafting Females or those that identify as Unicorns or whatever.

Selective Service as it was... was just fine, there is no Draft, I see no reason to mess with it unless the “Identify” Unicorn Lobby starts slinging big bucks Hillary’s way.

We get the Govt that “THEY” pay for ... Flavor of the Month when the elected start getting close to retirement.

Always thought Ron was different and he may be

I expect you soon won’t have to register if you self identify as a female...

Don’t American women insist on being placed in the front ranks during combat?

Getting rid of the draft does not "gut" any constitutional powers.

It just means that if we want to draft again, we have to have Congress pass a law like it did in 1863, 1917, and 1941.

I am completely fine with that.

It’s a very easy way to get support for people who you can then draw on to help with real issues and with absolutely no drawbacks unless you seriously think that Clowngress is going to invoke another draft anytime soon.
