Armies and navies are complicated organizations that require individuals with many different skills. Field commanders in WWII did know the difference between panzers and pancakes, schutzstaffels and schnitzels, but they may not have known about the details of Nazi ideology. Support personnel knew their own field, but may not have had much knowledge about either weaponry or ideology. I wouldn't assume that bloggers behind the lines are necessarily more knowledgeable about either the current war or Islam because they learned ten words and could throw around insults without inhibitions.
If you were working for Army intelligence in 1940, and a new U.S. govt regime came in that forbade you to every type or speak the words Nazi, National Socialist, Gestapo, SS, Hitler etc, that would constitute deliberate sabotage from above, and if were allowed to stand, it would constitute dereliction of duty from below.
Today, we have literally farmed out our intelligence analysis to “Moderate Nazis” whom we believe to be our friends, while disallowing our own analysts from doing it.
If you’re cool with that, well, I’m not.
The deliberately insulting tone was meant to be a slap in the face to careerists who are just marking time until retirement and (they hope) pensions.
You cannot be a man of honor if you keep your head down and you countenance dishonor all around you, just to keep (you hope) your pension.
That is dishonorable.
It's not about throwing around insults. The goal is to understand what Islam is really about. If you know the ten words, you are at least on the road to achieving such knowledge.
