So, here's the story...
In less than 72 hours I will be out of my home of... well, a long time. It's been in my family for fifty years. But since my father passed away it's being sold by others and I'm looking for a new place to hang my hat.
But during the past several months God has been telling me something, in ways large and small. That being: it's time to get out of this town. Time to step away from your comfort zone. Time to take a leap of faith.
So I've packed up my car with the bare essentials and some things from across my life and made room for one miniature dachshund who may or may not play navigator. We're all set to go...
...but I don't know where to.
So... freepers... if I'm coming from the south-eastern United States, where in this country could a boy and his dog find a place with good industry/careers, a fairly conservative atmosphere, strong spiritual community, and all-around good place to have a family. Because I do want a family.
I can literally go anywhere. Dad made sure I was left with quite a bit and it's plenty enough for a good start.
I'm trusting in God bigtime on this. Now, if only I knew where He needed me to go. Maybe some of you can help me figure that out.
And twisting through the trailer parks....
Am I the only one who thought of Wyatt's Torch when I read that?
A small horse and cattle ranch just went on sale just up the road from me. This area meets your requirements, even though it has some warts too.
As someone who has done this many times...trusting in G_d is not a plan.
Each of these ‘moves’ will cost you a minimum of 10-15k by the time you jump thru all the hoops you will need to do.
Lots of nice places really have NO jobs. Now you have spent 10k to get there and are stuck pouring 50k/year just to live in an area you can’t afford.
Do some research, find 3 possibilities and then hop a flight and spend a weekend there.
I was considering buying a home in Boise, ID as a retirement location.
Spent a weekend there and was bored after a day.
Nice homes and nice people but not my cup of tea.
Rented a condo in Destin, FL.
Stunningly pretty ocean views without the tackiness of much of FL
Very close to what I was looking for but quality beach condos were expensive and not sure I’m a condo kind of guy.
Ended up buying a home in Scottsdale, AZ after taking 4 trips there shopping for homes.
Eliminated CO, NC, OR for various reasons.
Isn't Austin suffering from a major liberal infestation?
Lovely area........solid values......salt of the earth people.......
.....beautiful scenery combined with historical perspective......
We stayed in Franklin but had access to many interesting small towns within minutes.
It is, but they aren’t all liberal........mostly the college crowd
Austin has a good clime.....actually mirrors much of Central Florida
Good number of IT jobs.....beautiful location in the Hill Country
Food is amazing....
A great music city......really a lot to do
......and wander down the road to the next town surrounding Austin, and you find the ole time small town. Texas values.
A few years ago I would have recommended anywhere in Colorado.....
.....but politics have sure messed up that place.
Nebraska worked for me.
Or, do you have enough money so you don't have to work?
Either of those is the first step. The very first step.
Oklahoma, Tennessee, Nebraska, Texas. The economy is good and growing around Chattanooga, TN, Housing and utilities inexpensive. Atlanta close enough for big city trips. Lots of outdoors activities. Good people.
Pretty good advice there. Good jobs may be an iffy situation, but the rest might be just what this man is looking for.
I don’t know what’s going on in Rockport.
Haven’t been there in years.
Used to go there for art exhibits/contests when Simon Michael, the painter/teacher lived there. (He passed away some years ago)
Nice, pretty little place.
Conservative majority in state gov't...so far.
Prayers for wherever you go.
#27 Someone has to clean up after the horses! : )
“Fell in love with Pagoda Springs, CO, seeing horses regularly being ridden thru town, dont know about job opportunities.”
Do not come to the San Fransisco bay area unless you are in high tech. It’s none of the things you describe you want here. It’s oppressively leftist over taxed and expensive to live here. However it is the place for high tech computer careers.
I’ll let you off with a warning this time.
Fairhope is nice. I’m originally from Mobile and now live in South Mississippi.
So you don’t like Coeur d’alene?
Just head out. I was young and landed in Phoenix. Nice for a while but Appalachians were calling.
Alaska might be fun for a while. W.NC or NE TN is where I will retire unless I can nab a place at OBX.
