Vanity: Where should I point my car toward?

So, here's the story...

In less than 72 hours I will be out of my home of... well, a long time. It's been in my family for fifty years. But since my father passed away it's being sold by others and I'm looking for a new place to hang my hat.

But during the past several months God has been telling me something, in ways large and small. That being: it's time to get out of this town. Time to step away from your comfort zone. Time to take a leap of faith.

So I've packed up my car with the bare essentials and some things from across my life and made room for one miniature dachshund who may or may not play navigator. We're all set to go...

...but I don't know where to.

So... freepers... if I'm coming from the south-eastern United States, where in this country could a boy and his dog find a place with good industry/careers, a fairly conservative atmosphere, strong spiritual community, and all-around good place to have a family. Because I do want a family.

I can literally go anywhere. Dad made sure I was left with quite a bit and it's plenty enough for a good start.

I'm trusting in God bigtime on this. Now, if only I knew where He needed me to go. Maybe some of you can help me figure that out.

Portland could be a good place for this young man. It’s small but close to Corpus Christi.

I love Victoria. I grew up there.
It’s a lovely old, historic city of about 62 thousand, heavily wooded with the lovely Guadalupe river running practically through the city. There is a large park along the river with picnic tables and barbecue pits.
The Gulf of Mexico is not far away.

It has museums, a zoo, a two year community college as well as a four year college.

I grew up in the Midwest, but 25 years in the army gave me the privilege of seeing a lot of America. If I were starting out all over again, I would try one of these places: Alaska, Western Montana, San Antonio TX, or Guam. I have been all over the world, but any of these would be worth settling down in .Good luck and Godspeed your journey.

I’ll go out on a limb here. Visit Australia. Go to Victoria and explore the coast north of Melbourne. If you love it. Come back for the dog and your possesions. People are great. Weather is great. Life is slow and uncomplicated. Aussie women know they are women. The socialism and other BS dissappear once you are out of the 7 major urban areas.

Take a look at Idaho Falls. Largest city in the US without a 4 year college. Avoid the civic idiocy that accompanies the overeducated and under experienced.

Indianapolis. Look at the donut counties, and stay out of the city proper. Conservative. Spiritual. Low crime. Low cost of living. Great schools. Booming economy relative to the rest of the country. Great infrastructure. Places to look at online include Greenwood, Brownsburg (both have a southern feel). Zionsville. Noblesville. Fishers, Carmel, Westfield, and Geist among others. ‘Hoosier hospitality’ is a real thing, so pretty easy to integrate here as well. Do some homework on the area.

You need to stick with your family. When TSHTF, it is family who will be there for you.

Man is not made to live alone. on the other hand, if you just want to avoid big brother, move to Texas or Oklahoma.

Stay right there in the US Southeast. Just find a town with better demographics. There are hideously politically correct towns and neighborhoods in every corner of the US. Life is easier in the Southeast, people are generally more laid back, opportunities are greater.

You make a mistake in looking for a geographical cure to your dissatisfaction. Because, everywhere you go, there you will be.

Got something in mind already. When they open the door to the (kinda) empty house, in the middle of the floor is going to be an unlit candle standing upright. And at its base a little sign saying:

I grew up in Ohio moved to NJ when I was 28 and have been in NJ for 20 years. If I were in your situation and believe me, I’ve thought about it a lot, I’d move to either Northern Nevada, Idaho, northern Arizona or Alaska.

You can tell a lot about a state by its gun laws.

If a state has unrestricted open carry of firearms, it is significantly more free in all aspects of life. States(NJ, NY, MD) that will jail you if you have a hand gun in your car, locked in the trunk but you aren’t on your way to a gun range/shop or hunting, are the exact opposite.

I think I would like Alaska for the ability to get some isolation and freedom, I just don’t know if I could live with 8 months of winter, 2 months of spring, 2 months of fall and a warm weekend ;).

Stay out of California, anywhere in the northeast although NH could be workable and any state that isn’t shall issue concealed carry.

You have to stay away from grasping liberals who will tax and regulate you to death.

Auburn, AL It has been ranked as one of the best places in the US to retire. The church I attend, Trinity Presbyterian, is a good, solid church. Mild winters and a long growing season make Auburn a beautiful city. It is an hour-and-a-half from Atlanta, and two or three hours from Birmingham (I can't remember which). It has a large elder community as well as a growing college student body. It is called, rightly, "Auburn, Sweet Auburn, the loveliest village on the Plain," (adopted from the poem by Oliver Goldsmith).
