It would depend on your tone.

The analogy of the rat was chosen to demonstrate the point that 'a rat is a rat, a rabid rat is a rabid rat' .. and to call a rabid rat a rabid rat ... is not nasty.

I'm not calling Cruz a red barn either.

Look Giles, I believe Ted Cruz has some serious mental problems. That is my belief. I would, in fact, not want him near my daughter. I only know him from the point of view of a well read / educated voter. If you expect a well read / educated voter to be in possession of evidence that a candidate is mentally ill is ludicrous.

One thing though - you may not be hearing in my tone ... since it's typing and not speech, that when I say 'sick' ... I mean it. I think he's sick. I'm not saying 'gross and disgusting' ... I'm saying, I think there is mental illness there.

Now, if your grandmother had cancer, and I said 'I think your grandmother has cancer - I've known people who had cancer, and there is something in her skin color and in her eyes I recognize, not to mention the lump on her back' ... would I be being nasty?

I understand that what I said is very negative ... but what can I tell you? If you ask me 'what is 2 minus 4' I am forced to answer 'negative 2' ... you can't try to pin me for being negative ... I think he's actually missing empathy, compassion ... not in the cliche feely way ... I mean that I think neurologically there are social and other synapses that aren't firing. His context is different from yours and mine. You can't imagine that, so all you hear is insult.

There are people like that.

He's also a liar. When you combine the disconnectedness with the lies ... and to a lesser extent the arrogance and scheming and those whacked out things he says (rat copulation) ... well, often, you have mental illness.

So I'm sorry Giles, I don't know what to tell you. I'd feel bad for the guy, but right now there's something more important than Ted Cruz's personal welfare going on.
