The University Administration acted swiftly, as well it should. Did the administration have a real appreciation of freedom of speech, or did it simply toss the cops under the bus when it got push back from alumni donors?

Did the administration have a real appreciation of freedom of speech, or did it simply toss the cops under the bus when it got push back from alumni donors? One would be nice but let's not drag it into the realm of "hate/thought crime ideology" by worrying about the thinking behind the action (in this case a good action vs. a bad action) - the action was proper and that's good enough for me.
