The "rm" tells the computer to remove; the r deletes everything within a given directory; and the f stands for "force", telling the computer to ignore the usual warnings that come when deleting files.

Mostly correct; the argument 'r' is for recursive. So "rm -rf" means starting in the current directory, remove everything recursively and don't bother warning me.

Micro Soft came up with a truly insidious way to do something like that to you in Win7: Unlike in XP, when you copy a file from one folder to another in the Explorer window, it “highlights” the folder you copy to (does not keep the original file highlighted). When you then hit ‘delete’, *poof* the whole folder is gone! Found out the hard way when I switched from XP. Thanks, MS! (Usually I ‘move’ instead of ‘copy’, but that one time...)
