Conservatives make up a minority of the electorate. Maybe 25% on a good day. Hence, it cannot win nationwide and rarely statewide with the semi-socialist electorate it faces.
Conservatism MUST attract all patriots, populists and nationalists to win. ONLY Trump can do this.

Trump, under the Republican banner (whether they like it or not) has been the only one to "expand the tent", whereas the GOPe definition of expanding the tent had to do with ordering Rove a new bathrobe.
