Many survival preppers talk about stashing their cache supplies and its content. But, not much is talked about other things to look for or have in their cache that doesn't fall under food and water. Here 10 that you may have overlooked.
1. Heirlooms Seeds - For the uninitiated, heirloom seeds are ones that are a true strain. Meaning, if you grow a watermelon from an heirloom seed, the seeds found in the ripe melon can be planted the next season and will, theoretically at least, grow just fine.
2. Greenhouse Supplies - Even a very basic hoop house covered in plastic will greatly extend the growing season. You can find plans online for several different types of DIY greenhouses.
3. Fire Extinguishers - When all fire-fighting duties fall on you and your family, you'll certainly appreciate the addition of at least a few decent fire extinguishers.
4. Wagons - Whether it is a robust model like you’d find at a garden center or just an old Radio Flyer, wagons are excellent back savers.
5. Feminine Hygiene and Health Products - Many if not most preppers will think to stock up on things like pads and tampons, especially if there's a female involved with the prepping.
6. Sewing Supplies - If traveling down to the local discount retailer to pick up new duds becomes no longer an option, having at least needles, thread, and some patches will extend the life of your clothes. Read the rest of the story here.
Even better, get an old wood burning stove and learn how to convert your vehicle to run on wood gas once the juice runs out.
Actually, I suspect most folks will find a way to brew (or distill) their own. Most of it will be bowl cleaner, but eventually they'll iron out the kinks. And in a post-apoc world, anything that numbs the pain will be useful.
The solid coconut oil is getting less pricey and it keeps for a very long time. It is worth stocking up on.
Also, you can get bricks of sealed Crisco. I vac seal them and store them in the freezer. Another long lasting cooking oil product.

#1. Water
Buy or build a solar oven. Remember it’s not the outdoor temperature but the sunshine.
Yeah, cooking oil is good to stock up on, but eventually it does go bad. The good news is, you can make cooking oil out of a large variety of plants, nuts, or seeds, if you have a press to squeeze it out. You could also make lard from animals, but wild game won’t have much fat to make it with unless you nab some right before the winter starts.
Maybe plant a few nut trees if you have land, the nuts are good for protein, they’ll attract squirrels you can trap, and you can press any nut to make good cooking oil.
Condoms on the list but not cleaning supplies?
Nah, no nukes in Mad Max. You have to satisfy yourself with blowing them up with gas cans or explosive-tipped harpoons and javelins. It’s usually more fun to just beat them to a pulp with your fists though.
I never use minis myself. I was a plasma rifle guy in 3 and NV but am Shotgun and 50 cal in 4.

A solar oven is a great idea - no smoke when cooking, no sound, no telltale glow at night (though there are other means to avoid that) - and it’d be great for making jerky to make any meat you have last as long as possible.
True. It’s not going to be a skill most people will be able to just figure out either, if they didn’t bother to learn it ahead of time.
There are still tribes on this planet that only get fire from lightning strikes because they can’t figure it out. I imagine some people will be reduced to that, if they are even smart enough to figure THAT trick out.
They’ll just google it...
A former boss was telling me about his uncle who lived through the Great Depression. They caught and ate fish for most of their meals but at some point were not able to buy cooking oil so most of the time the fish was boiled. The uncle said he got tired of boiled fish so one day he put the fish in a pan to fry it and added a little water to keep it from burning and sticking to the pan. My boss asked him what it tasted like. He said, boiled fish.
“Survivor” tv show first aired in 2000 and most of the contestants are still clueless about starting fires. Probst tells them every week how important fire is and they’ve had 30 something seasons to realize this simple concept. They also have no clue how to build a shelter. At least they’ve realized they must know how to swim. Amazing how these people were given a start date and still manage to mess it up. We aren’t given a date for an EMP or a nuke.
Yeah, it’s good. Probably not as challenging as a Fallout game, but it focuses more on the driving/vehicular combat stuff. There is plenty of scavenging, capturing bases, doing missions, stuff like that, but that gets a little repetitive after a while. The vehicular combat is always fun because the enemies and vehicles tend to get stronger faster than you can upgrade your weapons or skills to match them.
Don’t forget a few cases of dehydrated water to add to your supplies.
I take it the whole dig a hole/cave in the snow bank to not freeze to death thing is far beyond them as well. To quote John Denver...
“Thank God I’m a country boy”.
