These types of article's oversimplify the role technology has played in the entire estimates of global reserves through time. The seismic revolution came about in the 1960’s, which greatly affected exploration. Then 3-D seismic and improved migration algorithms and computer revolution; precise directional drilling into formerly perceived tight source rock and fracing - large volumes of oil reserves that were not viewed in the same context as conventional fields and production.
