When I was a kid growing up in the 1970s, my mother used to get all these doomsday books like “The Population Bomb” and “Future Shock” and I would read them too. I remember staying up late at night worrying about how were were going to run out of food by 1990, out of oil by 1980, etc., etc. I thought for sure that the world was going to end by the time I got old enough to get out in it.
When I graduated in Petroleum Engineering in ‘73, I was told by someone I would have to find another job as the world would run out in 10 years. I just retired after 42 years in the oil industry, and nothing could be further from the truth.
