UMass-Amherst Protesters Demand New College Seal Because Bows and Arrows are Racist
iOTW Report ^ | 11/23/15 | Aurelius

UMass-Amherst students are protesting their school's seal, claiming it promotes racism and violence, because it depicts a Native American holding a bow and an arrow.

While the seal does depict an arm holding a sword, protesters have taken issue with the Native American man centered in the logo. The Indian can be seen standing in the center:

The allegedly racist and violent seal

"We do live in occupied, colonized land," said student organizer Charlotte Kelly, who called the logo "offensive."

She continued, "This land had been a part of indigenous communities before it became the University of Massachusetts. And for us to be capitalizing and using a Native American figure as our seal seems really hurtful and violent."

Ms. Kelly also had problems with UMass-Amherst's mascot, the Minuteman, because it is a gendered male:

Minutemen

The protesters at UMass-Amherst are also demanding "more recruitment of students of color" and "gender-neutral bathrooms."

That’s not going to change.

Actually, the business school is VERY good. And the science specialties are good.

But if you are not in one of those you are going to do better at one of the local state colleges.

Here is the description of the state seal:

e COAT OF ARMS, according to legislative enactment, consist of “a shield having a blue field or surface with an Indian thereon, dressed in a shirt and moccasins, holding in his right hand a bow, and in his left hand an arrow, point downward, all of gold; and, in the upper corner of the field, above his right arm, a silver star with five points. The crest is a wreath of blue and gold, on which in gold is a right arm, bent at the elbow, clothed and ruffled, with the hand grasping a broadsword”. The shield’s shape is called “Plantagenet”; the Native American model used was of the Algonquin nation; the arrow points downward to indicate that the Indian is peaceful; and the star indicates that Massachusetts was one of the original thirteen states; it was sixth. The sword illustrates the Latin motto that is written in gold on a blue ribbon around the bottom of the shield: “Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem”. This is the second of two lines written about 1659 by Algernon Sydney, English soldier and politician, in the Book of Mottoes in the King’s Library in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was adopted in 1775 by the Provincial Congress and means, “By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty”.

I didn’t say there weren’t centers of excellence at the school.

However, it seems there’s a large mass of the not-so-bright carried by the college.

Those are not inconsistent observations.

Also, it’s from this mass of the silly that I expect some of the current PC nonsense to be exuded.

There aren’t any of them. Lord Jeff, from Amherst gave them blankets with smallpox.

Do a search to cross reference how Amherst wants to dump him as their mascot.

With all this crap going on, they are going to screw up their finals.

It’s really no different than any other state university.

I’ve spent a lot of time on college campuses. It was my job for 15 years.

Generally, about 1/3 of the people there, students and profs have no business there.

OMG!

It's worse than they say.

That poor oppressed indigenous American is portrayed in white face!

And the maroon/wine color is almost a perfect match for the NFL Redskins' Burgundy! How racist is that!

The anonymous arm poised for a sword stroke on the hapless native American should he step out of line. Surrounded by a sea of White, White, White....

And what's up with the not so subtle position of the letters C and R on his knees and the letter P on his right instep. CRP is text speak shortcut for Crap!

And as if all that wasn't insulting enough, they made him look like Bruce Jenner or maybe Jackson Brown...

;>) odd, I feel so much better now.

Dr Bennett had a Collegiate Wonk on today and I get the impression these kids are all getting close to screwing the pooch or jumping the shark. Some College soon will say No and possibly behind the scenes alumni are contacting these institutions and denoting their horror and they are done donating. Money talks, maybe this time it will stick....

Did these students suddenly become aware of the seal, or are they just suddenly offended by it?

They might be following up on an earlier success.
The LOGO for the Mass.Turnpike was a Pilgrim's hat with an arrow piercing it.
Some beefed about it being offensive.
That got changed to just the Pilgrim's hat, without the arrow. - Tom

To me the seal honors the Indian. I must be crazy.

So must I. I thought the seal was flattering. Same with the names "Redskins, Braves," etc.

"We do live in occupied, colonized land," said student organizer Charlotte Kelly, who called the logo "offensive."

Charlotte Kelly is a left-wing extremist who doesn't even understand her own politics and beliefs.

The Indians were wealthy land owners. They were not "colonized", rather they just were on the receiving end of the leftists' holy grail, namely "Land Reform".

I'll bet that poor little Charlotte is a fan of "Land Reform", because she evidently is a fan of all other sorts of leftist idiocy. But she's clearly not smart enough to recognize the results of her own ugly agenda - even if it were written out for her with small words and big letters, using a crayon.

All these colleges and universities are run by aging hippies of the “free speech generation.” It’s ironic that the “free speech generation” has used their freedom of speech to turn one college and university after another into ivy covered North Koreas, where freedom of speech is denied to most, individual thought is discouraged, and freedom of association is outlawed for the majority. If you violate any of their long list of rules, you will be sent to a re-education class, or maybe even expelled.

But since the majority of students on college campi are now females, that correlates with increasing fascism we see in academia. Yeah, I know...correlation is not causation.

The reason they're predominantly female is the same reason the liberal religious denominations are predominantly female: the men left. The conservative women followed right after.

Usually it's a sign of decadence when women, or rather, overfeminized influences, take over an institution. (I'm a woman, BTW.)Women have always been highly represented in certain professions, but they answered to male or "patriarchal" authority. Now, basically, the women want to either do what they please or control everything to suit their fantasy.

These "Nervous Nellies" (most of them are uptight or neurasthenic) who are waving feminist banners don't realize that they've won the battle but lost the war.

Remember when.... the preposterous fads of young college idiots ran simply to stuffing telephone booths and washing/polishing the jalopy ...?

Halcyon days.

Money talks, maybe this time it will stick....

Definitely money will talk. These schools are going to financially bleed big time. It's death by a thousand cuts, as alumni will abandon them, one by one. I will never give a dime to UCLA, my alma mater. My guess -- these places are all going to turn into inner-city high schools.

You're right--the kids seem to be jumping the shark (never heard that other expression, LOL!).

My guys were STEM or business. They said the foolishness existed, but didn’t affect education for those who were there for education. They walked around and laughed at the demonstrators.

However, this year, things seem crazier on the college scene all around the US. I’m sure it’s OFA encouraged or supported. What I have no feel for is how big a segment of the students are involved in the new Red Guard.
